Hated it when cans went from metal sides to cardboard sides. Invariably, the spout wouldn't pierce the top, and the side would collapse, causing an "Exxon Valdez" on the garage floor.

Woke people need to shut up and respect their elders. As folks were smarter back then and things are merely improved upon today. I remember those oil can spouts as a youngster. Thanks for posting the flashback.

I remember that as a teenager. Set the cardboard can in a pan on the floor. Hold the spout in place with left hand. Give the end of the spout a sharp punch with the heel of right hand. Usually only got one shot. If it messed up, that’s why it was in the pan. After about 10 cans, it was usually, “My hand hurts. Where are my gloves and what did we do with the rubber mallet?”

I could use it ! have 6-7 Imperial quarts of 10W30 here, somewhere..along with 4 STP cans....
friend filed the 'piecer' to ALWAYS get the spout on 1st time....

We used to have 55 gallon drums of oil with a hand pump, and a gallon galvanized can with a flexy, droopy spout and a trigger to open the valve in the bottom to put oil in engines. No cans to mess with.

Oil can spout. The pointy bit punctured the metal can top then you poured the oil into the engine with the spout end.

Kind of like a pop can opener. Oh wait, you probably never used one of those either.

I think those went out around 1987?
I still remember a case of oil was 24 cans.
As the cardboard can showed up,I usually punched the spout into the can halfway and then pull it out and bend the tab and re-insert the spout for best results.
