In the process of resealing a front steering knuckle I've hit a wall: The local dealers provided a replacement seal that Kubota says "supersedes" the correct part. In the Kubota online parts list earlier models require a distinct part (#32580-43620 as opposed to the later32590-43620), but presently Kubota specs the latter as a direct replacement.
I've ended up with kinpin seals that measure 6.5 mm (1/4") oversize: there's no press on this planet that'll ever put my beloved l5450 together again with this incorrect seal.
According to the dealer Kubota is discontinuing most of the parts i've recently purchased for this job.
The machine is somewhere between 20 and 30 yrs old, but otherwise runs fine. I hope i don't have to write it off as obsolete...

Perhaps you can find a generic seal that will fit. Chicago Rawhide catalog might be worth a look.

Apparently there's a ring that has to come out of the housing. Take a look at this post.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Kubota customer care id'd the problem as a sleeve they dropped(cost reduced?) from the bill of materials after 600 or so models. Apparently the superseding part will fit after removing the sleeve.. It's pressed into a blind bore on the case so I guess i'll try welding a bar across the ID and pressing.
Unless anybody has a less draconian sol'n:geek:

You may find its a light press that comes out easy. Maybe a drift from the other end?

But if not, I'd just cut a diagonal slot with a Dremel abrasive disk and break it.

Common problem with cups used with tapered roller bearings. Run a cold bead around the ID of the sleeve being careful of the housing. The sleeve will contract and if you did a good job with the welder will fall right out.

I use that technique on a regular basis to remove bearing cups and I am not a particularly good welder.

That's a good trick- i'd already tacked in a bar to press and was in the process of mounting it. But after adding the cold bead as you recommended it tapped right out! if you're ever in Portland i owe you a beer...

Thanks- but believe it or not the Kubota requirement is that the sleeve is removed and the casting itself runs in contact with the seal... best not to add any scratches.

I think you better drink that beer yourself - not likely i will be able to cash that ticket. Glad it came out easy and hope the rest of that repair goes as easily.
