TG1860 diesel hard starting

Takes about 10-20 sec of turning key and holding before I finally get ignition to occur. Engines turns over fine just will not start immediately. My glow light does not come on when engine key is turned on so wondering if glow plugs are working? Any other suggestions to check?

Owned one ~15 yrs, but am no expert. Sounds like you answered your own question though.
I know if I don't give the glow plugs the full 10 seconds (or whatever the timer is set to) it's very hard
to start. The only exception to that would be if I've had it on mowing or working, shut it off and come back 5-10 minutes later, it'll start quite easy (because it's already quite warm)

Glow plugs (or lack thereof) is your issue.

There's been a couple of threads in the past of adding a relay in the start circuit. It eliminates the "leaking" connections.

Not to rain on your question, but today for s&&ts giggles and grins I decided to bypass glow plugs on my 2160 going straight to "start" from ambient temp (about 85F). Touch more smoke puffed out but it fired right off in about 2 seconds. Not sure if it's harmful to do that. Just wanted to see how it would act

If you keep cranking for long periods the next thing to replace will be the starter.

Check fuses then focus on the GP's

Reading this thread on the EPS controller may enlighten you.

I do not know your TG1860 but often there is a temp input to the controller managing the GP on time.

Note the reference to EPS in the Glow light troubleshooting section. EPS is Electronic Power Steering but it seems to do more than manage the steering and outputs error codes in the form of flashing lights in the link EPS CONTROLLER I provided earlier.

This is a small tractor by Kubota standards but that does not mean it is not complicated.

If the outside air temp is about 60 degrees or more, glow plugs should not be needed on most modern diesels (modern=2000 and newer).

Typically hard starting, in my experience, is usually a function of compression loss.

Ah, so no "harm" if I choose to go straight to start? The engine sure didn't seem to mind.
No, no harm at all. If it's not firing up, go back to using the GPs.


Back to davidon's question:


How about some basics? Get a test light or meter and find out if you have power to the GPs.

Start there and report back.

Once you get it started, and were to kill it, how would it restart? Engine would still be cold. If it starts right up, you could have a fuel prime issue.

As far as the plug light, I would check the bulb, and put a meter on the bus bar.
