New Member. recently sold my L3400 needed bigger Tractor. Been waiting for MX5400 since November. With all the time I started looking for a Low Hour Used Tractor. I’m starting to second guess New Tractor. I’m 56 years old, been driving Tractors for years,I’m a put it in gear and drive with the foot throttle person. Should I be concerned with “regen” ?? Could some of y’all please help with some input on my decision? Thank You Very Much.

I drove older (1950’s and older) gas tractors for decades before getting my L4701 a year and a half ago. Regen was a bit concerning and intimidating at first because reading the instructions in the manual made it seem quite complicated. In practice, regen is not a big deal at all. Light comes on, increase RPM if tractor requests increase, keep working, make sure light is off before reducing RPM or shutting down. From an operating perspective regen is a non-issue.

The advantage of a pre-emissions machine is in the maintenance and repair areas. Pre-emission is a simpler system. There is no expensive DPF filter to be replaced at a few thousand hours (I don’t know the exact number for yours). Generally speaking simpler systems are cheaper and easier to maintain. Haven’t heard of people having problems with the DPF systems aside from one model (I believe the B3350).

Of course with any used machine there’s always the risk you’re buying unknown problems.

If you’re mostly concerned about regen being a complicated PITA from the standpoint of operating the tractor, I wouldn’t be concerned about that at all.

If you’re planning to do all the work on it yourself and/or would prefer a simpler machine, that could be a legitimate issue with Tier 4 v pre-emission.

Just my opinion.

I agree with NCL 4701. Purchased my tractor 10/20 and now have 68 hours operating. Regen about every 20 hours. I operate my tractor at 2200 rpms and just keep doing whatever I was doing until re-gen light goes out. Re-gens take about 15 minutes to complete.

Bottom line - unless you want a machine under 26HP (the L2501 is the biggest new machine with no emissions), or you want an older machine (before about 2013 I think), you're going to have DPF. There are an awful lot of them out there, and not so many complaints. In general the main thing is that you use your tractor at higher revs, rather than idling around everywhere and using the torque. If you do that, it should be mostly invisible to you.
