Implement storage is getting to be a real problem!

Not complaining, just making an observation. I have a lot of implements now and storage is a real challenge. In a perfect world I wouldn't have to move one or two implements in order to gain access to another. A large, flat, covered area is on my wish list. I think a lean-to along one or both sides of a barn would be a good way to keep implements out of the weather and accessible so hopefully some members here will post photos showing how they solve the issue of implement storage and accessibility.

Smooth concrete. Put everything on casters. Heaviest thing I have is this 800lb chipper. Steel casters have very little rolling friction so they make it easy to move stuff around. The chipper came on a swell steel pallet so I reinforced the corners a bit and just that for the chipper. Other stuff, I made plywood dollies of appropriate sizes and rimmed them with 2x4’s for the really heavy stuff such as the box scrape. Makes storage much simpler and efficient. For instance, where the chipper is sitting in the photo; no way I could put it there with the tractor.

Also I don’t have a quick hitch and it makes installing and removing stuff from the 3 point MUCH easier to load it off a castered dolly.

I do have some lighter, less often used implements in a dirt floor shed and they’re more of a pain to deal with but don’t use them much and they’re light enough to manhandle a bit. Manhandling the chipper or box scrape to wiggle it around to hitch would require a bigger man than me if they weren’t on casters.

Yep a couple moving dollies from HF, on a piece of plywood, and roll them out of the way. Now if you dont have a solid floor, you might think about some kind of shelving racks

Implement Stand

In the ongoing effort to reclaim my mountain garage as a garage rather than a storage facility, I built this stand to store implements on/in. All the materials were on hand left from various projects & some judicious scrounging, so cost was labor & time only. The plow, box blade, forks, backhoe...

Just do what I did. Have your brother build a house with a 2000SF drive in basement and 900SF carport beside yours on family land. Then have him move out and leave it unoccupied so you can park all your stuff in the climate controlled basement. For any overflow, have your Dad build a 1500SF enclosed pole shed he only uses half of. Works great for me. If I had to park all my stuff at my place it would look like a used equipment dealership.

That's kind of what I'm doing except they're next to a garage and the ground slopes away from the garage ... significantly!

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to get the ground prepared for containers so that I can start working on a new steel framed barn but it's time, equipment and money. I may shift the original location of the new barn a few feet downhill so that I can make a lean-to off the containers and have a 40' long, flat, covered area for the implements.

If you are buying more then one container get the ones with doors at both ends and 9ft 6 in high. Then add a roof between them.

I'm faced with two possible solutions.

• Two 20' containers side by side with a 3' gap between them and a lean-to the length of both sides for implement storage. This would require a flat area with sufficient length and width.
• Two 20' containers end to end with a lean-to down one side or both sides. This would require a flat area with less width but more length than the above arrangement.

The second option makes more sense with my plan for a new 30'x60' steel framed barn but would still require me to move the barn a little. Also, I don't think I have enough space for a 40' lean-to along both sides, maybe 40' on one side and 20' on the other closest to the bank.

I keep getting offers on the BX but I'm not yet at the point yet of being ok with selling it and might never be. However, in an effort to reduce the storage burden I've decided to sell off some of the BX implements that have been made redundant by the MX with its bigger and more capable implements. Hopefully I can get them sold on Craigslist.

A carousel would be awesome! I have a couple of fairly high end gun safes but it's such a pain to get firearms in/out and some companies offer carousel models to help solve that problem.

What I'm doing is utilize the side and end of my open carport to store the implements. That way they are level, I can back right up to any one of them, and with the overhangs they're mostly protected. I have to move a couple more things along with some firewood then I can turn the flail and aerator around to face out the back, along with the rear blade. The grapple, landscape rake, 48" and 66" buckets face out the side
