Oh geez Steve, so sorry to hear that....

I honestly have no recommendations, but sincere hopes it all works out okay.

Afterthought, you should look at one of those services that does the credit check services on your behalf.

My only concern is that some of those are also a scam....can't trust anyone anymore....

If you have identity theft protection such as Lifelock or Identity Force, notify them and do what they tell you. If you don’t have something like that, get it. If you become aware of any fraudulent or attempted fraudulent activity file a police report. Police may not do anything about it, but you’ll probably need the report to fight the charges.

Unless you need to borrow money, I’d freeze credit for both of you and leave it that way. You just need a bit of lead time if you ever need to get a loan.

Edit: I do not suggest a simple credit monitoring service. All that does is tell you there’s a problem. Lifelock or IdentityForce will actually fix it for you if you have a problem. About $300/yr but worth 10x that if you have a problem.

I would also :

Contact the Social Security Fraud Hotline at (800) 269-0271. Let them know what happened to make sure they don't file bogus ss claims

Call the Internal Revenue Service at (800) 908-4490 to report what happened and help prevent someone from submitting a tax return in your name.

(above recommendations were from a website I was looking at a week ago)

Contact the folks at Zander Ins. they are the folks Ramsey uses. They will assign an agent to get all the information you have and guide you on what and how to do what is needed.

A couple of years ago someone scammed an account my wife had. She called them and they contacted her and followed through with everything that needed to be done.

Sorry to hear that you are going through all of this. Hard enough for you having to handle the dementia of your wife without someone scamming the both of you.

Cows out of the barn but... for may dad, I gave him a card filled with bogus numbers and a note to have anyone contact me if help is needed. My dad would tell me from time to time that he got a call and they wanted information, he was glad I 'put it all in one place'. He made mention of some of the callers using foul langugae. I of course, never got follow up calls from any of these so=-called 'agents'.

"Call the Internal Revenue Service"

Yep - my daughter ran into that "Tax identity theft". She gets a PIN from the IRS every year now that's required to file. Major pain.

BTW, don't answer those calls. It's like the email spammers, they compile lists when they get ANY response and sell them to other scammers.

I got my call (again) last evening from "Amazon" thanking me for my recent $399 purchase. At least it is down from the previous $999 purchase. If I did not make this purchase I should immediately call..........
