Congress is debating raising the minimum hourly wage to $15. Most Walmart employees are paid $7 to $8.

The Walton family is one of the richest families in the USA (billionaires). They were invited to send a representative to the hearings; they declined.

Costco pays $15/hr minimum; they did send a representative to the hearing. They just went to $16/hr

1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer, and most can't speak English.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger Safeway combined, keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx. 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur At a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion).

12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.

13. The value of product for Wal-Mart passing through the port of San Diego each year is a larger sum than 93% of ALL countries Gross National Product (GNP)..... and that is only ONE port... one way – that’s how Wal-Mart gets it's stuff.

14. Of the 1.6 million employees, only 1.2% make a living above the poverty level.

15. Wal-Mart's head office is located and centralized in Bentonville, AR. Due to this fact, there are more millionaires per square mile there than any place on Earth.

16. The official U.S. Government position is that Wal-Mart's prices are no lower than anyone else's when compared to a typical families weekly purchase. That's the view of the statisticians at the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (BLS) responsible for calculating the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

17. 92% of everything Wal-Mart sells, comes from China . Another 4% comes from Chinese owned companies in the U . S . or in 3rd world Countries.

18. Wal-Mart and MOST large companies, take out life insurance on its employees, without their knowing.
If an employee dies, ALL the insurance moneys go to the companies. ( i.e. An employee making $18,000 per year, dies, and the company might make as much as $1 million. Most often these monies, coming from what is commonly referred to as "Dead Peasant Life Insurance Policies", is paid out to executives as bonuses. A common practice, unknown by the average consumer.

19. Wal-Mart now averages a "profit" (not sales) of $36 billion per year.

20. Let Wal-Mart bail out Wall Street. If not, consider shopping someplace else.

If all the Wal-Mart stores for some reason closed, would China go bankrupt? Scary thought?

What is interesting to me, Walmart has only been around since 1962. They managed to take out the giants of that time and become #1.

I wonder who will eventually take out Walmart?

In spite of what you heard, minimum wage is more than $7 or 8 in much of the country already. I think it makes more sense to be set at the local level.

I don’t believe most of what was posted in the thread starter is actually true.

But, if the minimum goes to $15 nationwide, then I guess politicians will be the ones that take down companies like Walmart.

Doesn't matter if you call the store walmart or amazon, it's nearly 100% MADE IN CHINA, and THAT is where YOUR hard earned the MONEY goes...

What the average 'Joe America' hasn't figured out is that China 'invaded' the USA and has taken it over. YOU wanted cheap goods and toy phones..well you got them, at a cost...

I am no Wal-Mart fan, but comparing Wal-Mart to Costco is almost apples-oranges. One is department store-ish and the other is warehouse-ish. I would think a lot more labor is involved with stocking shelves with individual items than wheeling in pallets.
Wal-Mart started out by skimming high-volume items and negotiating low costs from suppliers, but not offering high variety. As their offerings widened, I suspect corporate overhead has ballooned. I think 'shrinkage' out the front and back doors has also skyrocketed.
I predict if minimum-wage is doubled, large retailers will convert jobs to temp, or require more vendors to provide stocking. Either way, more low-paid people with no benefits.
I think Wal-Mart could compete/co-exist with Amazon if their shopping website was more usable. There should be a savings in shipping due to no door-to-door with small packages, and the buyer could pick up their order when they go to do their in-person shopping (if it was more convenient than it is now).
Yes, my consulting services are available. No experience available. :giggle:

A lot of these facts are wrong. WM pays nearly $15 on average ($14.72), and #14 is wrong (even if WM paid $7 it would be above the poverty level). And no way does Bentonville have more millionaires that NYC, Seattle or SF. I am no fan of Walmart, but this info is like a pork sandwich with "just a little bit of sh*t" in it. It's a pork sandwich still, but I'm not buying it.

When Sam Walton was alive he would come to KC and let his wife shop on the Plaza (an exclusive shopping area there). He was as down to earth as anyone you may know. Drove a pickup some times, didn't wear fancy clothes. Just an ordinary guy with a vision that had not been seen before. He grew a company out of nothing. Folks just don't like it too much when someone else has success and do everything possible to tear it down.

When Sam Walton was alive, everything sold in Walmart also had a "Made in America" tag on it. Walmart did not start selling imported goods until after ol' Sam was dead. He rolled in his grave, because his aim, goal, and purpose was to keep Americans working. Once it became corporation controlled, Sam became a figurehead, and the company started maximizing profits, like any big company does now. If they cannot get any more profit from the product sold, then their only choice is to cut it from what is budgeted to pay employees with. Lower salaries for new-hires, forced retirement for full-time employees, and NO ONE gets hired full time any more. Anyone working less than 38 hours per week does not have to be offered medical insurance or retirement plans. Pushing minimum wage to $15/hr is NOT going to fix what is wrong with commerce. Greed is a protected way of life for the 1 percenters. When they've got every big of the cash in their safes, I hope they can figure out a way to eat it. Meanwhile, country boys will survive.

Nearest town to me is Winnemucca, Nevada. Walmart put in a SuperWalmart in Winnemucca some 15 years ago and I for one was eternally grateful. Before Walmart, wife and I had to make a Reno run (350 mile round trip) every two weeks to buy simple essentials that could not be bought in Winnemucca. Now I drive to Reno twice a year to see my ophthalmologist and that's it. I know most of you have multiple options nearby where you can shop. We do not.

As for pay at Walmart - at least in the Winnemucca store the minimum wage is $17 an hour. That comes straight from the wife of a very good friend of mine, she is one of the top managers at the Winnemucca store.

And the big corporations have the ear of government and do everything they can to starve out competition. All the legal loopholes to jump through - who has the money to hire the lawyers and pay the fees?

I spent 30 years of my career with GE. When I went to work for them in 1982, it was daunting to see what GE owned. It was a wonderful company to work for, with fantastic benefits, and deep pockets. Starting with Jack Welch, as time went by, it became more daunting to see WHO they owned, and just how much they affected government policy.

The same arguments were made 100 years ago when people came from all over the world to work 12 hour days, 6 days a week ,under extremely dangerous conditions with relatively low pay for Andrew Carnegie. Then the richest man in the world . Walmart need not be a career. 8% of all retail in the US is conducted by Walmart. No-one is forced to work or shop there. I see the glass as half full. I think we are better off with Walmart being in the world. Andrew Carnegie left the US a much better place. Google his contributions to mankind. Its astonishing.

The $15.00 min wage is not going to hurt the big box stores but it will destroy small mom and pop stores, min wage should be set by the state and local governments because of the difference in the cost of living between states and even areas within states.

As for Walmart...a large part of their products are sourced from the USA...yes...the food for the most part comes from the USA, I look at it this way...if it were not for Walmart there would be a lot more people collecting a lot more money from the government

The increase in minimum wage is not going to move my wage. My salary is frozen by my employer that seems to think I was making too much when I got sold to them. I have a lot of politically incorrect ways of describing what happened and most would probably get me put in the penalty box for offending someone.

That said, when minimum wage goes up, so will prices, especially in big box stores, and more remarkably, on internet supply chains that have very little labor. It's that supply/demand thing. If Walmart can charge more for the deeluxe left-handed waffle turner, so can Amazon, and they both WILL. Ergo, the people that work at Walmart will get a pay increase, prices will go up, and their pay increase will disappear (most likely right back into their employer's pockets). I will NOT get a pay increase, but will still have to pay more for the same goods I want or need that the $15/hr people need/want, meaning, I effectively get a pay cut. They won't be any better off, but not any worse off, either, but I'll have less disposable income because of the increased prices. Less disposable income is a pay cut, plain and simple. The whole concept pushes us that one step closer to socialism.

This is no different from the greedy 'non-profit' insurance companies being given carte blanche to make me fork out $25,000/year in premiums, and another $10,000 in co-pays and deductibles before they actually pay for anything. I didn't get a raise, but I pay more for less coverage, ergo, I got a pay cut, twice over. Does that make sense? I don't know all the answers, but it's high time We the People got the representation we pay for, and not the representation that Big Oil, Big Insurance, Big Pharma, and Big Commerce pay for. Being able to profit from lobbying has to stop.

I'd rather keep this an economics discussion, but unfortunately, economics is way too interlaced with politics these days. We're probably all treading thin ice in this one.
