I am looking at a used BX23S tractor that is for sale, and I was wondering if there is any way to know if the tractor was financed or not. I don't want to hand money over to a stranger based on his word that he owns it outright.

hmm, is he the original buyer ? If so ...he should have the 'bill of sale', at the very least WHERE it was purchased. Kubota will know who it was sold to as they record the serial number of tractor, loader, backhoe and bucket..least up here in Ontario they did 3 years ago.....
Potential problem would be if it was financed through a 3rd party, say a rich relative. There could be a 'lien' on it. Maybe there's a 'lien search' company, you certainly don't want the 'repo man' to come visit you !

If you have a good relationship with your dealership for your other machines, they may do you a favor and run it to see if their is an outstanding lein on it or not.

I lucked out after I wrote this, by getting a hold of the selling dealer. It was paid in full by the seller. I also learned that if it were financed, that it would have a financing lien filled with the Secretary of State, and that it is a public record, that can be searched for a fee of $25. The seller got back to me and said that he has a copy of the original sales contract. All is good... thanks

IN ANY EVENT.... You should have him provide a BILL OF SALE in which he WARRANTS AND GUARANTEES the tractor is sold to you FREE OF ALL LIENS AND ENCUMBRANCES and that seller will do everything necessary to “PERFECT THE SALE” including but not limited to any claims against that tractor!

Get his Identification info ON the Bill of Sale, including a photostatic copy of I.D. (Drivers license, etc.)

DO NOT fail to get a Bill of Sale that warrants those things.
