if they want it, they're going to get it. Might not be fuel tax or toll road but they'll get it somehow. Tack it on somewhere else.

Insurance company did a deal where they charged according to mileage driven. People quit driving and they weren't making no money so out went that deal. Gas prices are rising (was expected) and people will start driving less once it gets up above $3/gal again. They buy less fuel, then less tax income generated, then the government is back to griping because they ain't got the money to fix potholes. But I guarantee you that the parking lots at the capital are top notch; as are the roads that lead to elected officials' personal homes. Funny how that works. My brother ratted one of them out locally and got somewhere with it. They tried to sweep it under the rug but he wouldn't drop the rug over the trash, left it open for everyone to enjoy. Probably didn't do himself any favors.
They had a similar issue here. County Judge had his extremely long driveway paved by county employees and equipment. But would fix the ditches and drainage issues around the county.

He got audited, spanked by the media and locals. A new judge was elected that actually takes his job seriously.

To make up for the last judges screw ups and waste of tax payers money, he had the crews out fixing all the ditches and drainage issues. And as roads were being fixed and paved, he had the paving crews pave the side streets as well if they were dirt.

Even our little dead end street with a total of 6 houses on it got paved 😁😁😁😁

As is evidenced by electric grid calamity during the recent Arctic cold snap, everyone wants new infrastructure, but nobody wants to pay for it.
Natural disasters tend to force the issue of updating the local infrastructure.

We used to lose power everytime there was a strong gust of wind. Two tornados came through the area 3 years almost to the day from each other.

Local power grid got decimated. Now about the only time we lose power is if a squirrel makes a bad decision. Powers restored as soon as the tech can get out here with his fiber glass pole and reset the transformer 😁😁😁😁😁😁

Yup ,, we already have the highest gas tax inthe country,, yes more than Ca ,, and now because of the covid thing, the state PENNDOT needs more money because people are not driving enough to boost the coffers. As of right now PENNDOT wants to put a 1 or 2 dollar toll on 9 of the bridges on I 79 to cover repairs the first on south of Pittsburgh near Bridgeville ,, and they want this toll for the next 30 years. Will these people ever stop???
I saw that too...and it makes little sense to me. Claim is the gas tax is down because of the pandemic. The negatives outweigh the positives in my view.

The PA legislature is not democratic like the governor. Will they let this happen? Hope not. I am neither...independent here...

.

It is crazy looking at the last red election map with the few blue spots on it how little of the country actually want Joe Xiden.
Yeah.... only a mere 81-Million or so...

In Texas, as I grew up, there were no toll roads. Energy taxes paid for the roads. (You can afford a car and gas..??? ...then you use roads.... what could be fairer? (Of course, since the mid-‘70s the reduction in oil production and more fuel-thrifty cars equals a per-capita reduction in revenues while automobile and trucking traffic has actually increased demand and damage to pubic highways..... so the maintenance bills of existing and the construction costs of new roads have been sky-rocketing.... Someone has to pay for it.... You got a car? You drive on roads? You gotta pay! Simple!

But also in the ‘70s Lt. Gov Ben Barnes brought-in a bunch of scandals and scams.... After he was kicked out of politics over it.... he found a NEW way to enrich himself at the expense of taxpayers... TOLL ROADS.

Here’s how it works: Take a public road sitting on public roght-of-way... and during a huge re-paving job which forces drivers onto the parallel feeders.... which have a stop light at every intersection/overpass. Then, get the newly-paved freeway converted to a TOLL to pay for the fresh paving...and see the rights to collecting the Tolls to a French Company that lines Ol’ Bens’ pockets.... Do this again and again. Pretty sneaky...taking a public road on public right of way that taxpayers paid for years ago and convert it to a Toll Road.... explaining that the parallel-feeder is still “free” for the average guy.

Then, he took it to a higher level: By-Pass the commercial districts with new Toll Roads by selling the idea to taxpayers that the 18-wheeler traffic thru downtown is the real problem and THEY will pay for the new TOll By-Pass.... politicians push it thru .... and tens of thousands of heritage family farms and property get condemned as “imminent Domain”... for the purpose of constructing the new roads. But truckers don’t LIKE paying the TOll.... so they add stop lights at almost every intersection to slow down the feeder streets.... and in 5 years or soo... a French company and Ol’ Ben are singing again “We’re IN the MONEY!... We’re IN the MONEY!!... “

Toll roads have come up in AZ several times in the past, and been resoundingly defeated by the voters every single time. If you look at an AZ road map, we have far fewer roads than most states back east, and there are many places/cities/towns/areas that can only be reached on a single road. (no secondary roads to shift onto to avoid tolls) This sets up a perfect storm for greedy politicians to rake in the cash. Now that this state has sadly "changed color", we can probably expect the toll road subject to raise it's ugly head again, and pass this time.

You must be younger than me. In about late 1955 or 56 the Dallas Ft Worth Turnpike opened now I30 . 50 cents to go from far west Dallas about Beltline Rd to east FtWorth. Seems like it was 30 miles toll booth to toll booth. Even had a Howard Johnson & Enco gas midway which is now 360. Eventually Six Flags Amusement Park was built there. You could drive 50 mph when 1st opened.
It actually got paid off & the toll booths removed but now the flim flam is in. Tolls on HO lanes . Politicians will allways smile while picking your pocket

OOOoooo.... I FORGOT about that one! Yes, I remember it... As I moved to FtW in ‘72 I ran across that as I had to drive to Love Field to catch flights..... Southwest to Houston Hobby was $9 and $7 on weekends.... $2 less than the bus!

How about fixing the system instead of just raising the taxes/tolls? Giving more money to a corrupt system is not going to fix the system. Term limits, line item veto, and the removal of lobbyist from inside the legislature would be a good start.
Too many people, mostly politicians and their cronies, benefit from the corrupt system that's in place. If you try to get an outsider into a position to do something about it, the corrupt establishment destroys them.

I can't imagine any congress in the last 40 years voting in favor of any of those things you mentioned.

One can only hope.
