Hydraulic Cylender Rebuild

I have leaking hydraulic cylenders on my older, 1977, 1200 loader. After finding a rebuild kit and figuring out a wire lock i have it apart. On the end on most cylenders is a nut that is usually removed with and impact wrench. NOT this one. It has a piece or metal the size of a nut but not multiple sided (perfectly round). It has 4 holes in the top where a spanner wrench may fit and a large hole drilled in the side. Any recommendations on how to get this unscrewed without damaging the facing? Not an experienced mechanic but never saw one without a nut.

hard to say without seeing it. The spanner wrench holes are in it for a reason, most likely. There is probably a special tool that fits over it with pins that engage into the holes, with a square drive on the outer end for a ratchet or breaker bar.

Buy a pin style spanner wrench for it and it will come right off. McMaster Carr has them. Might also be called a face style. You can buy fixed or adjustable.

With the hole in the side it may take a different spanner. Some people use a pipe wrench. If you post 4 more times, then could you attach a picture?

The correct tool is a spanner wrench, but in my garage, the correct tool is the one that works. I've done a few hundred cylinder rebuilds on Hyster and JD Fork trucks over the years, and almost always used a pipe wrench, nothing I've worked on ever had a nut on top, that would have made for less busted knuckles.

The nut on the end of the push rod is not a conventional nut but a compression nut which is tightened once the new seal and push rod is back in the cylinder.

You cannot service the L1200 cylinders like a conventional cylinder.
