I used the pipe method and Thompson Roller Ways to set my machine tools in the shop and my cherry picker too. Always using the cherry picker for stuff like moving parts under the overhead crane (I have a 5 ton air (IR) operated chain fall on a beam in the shop,) when the part I'm working on isn't far enough in to grab.

One more thought. I bought a 2 ton Titan brand gantry crane last year. I think it was around $800 including delivery. I feel its well made ,weighs about 400 pounds, and is very handy. I have used it a lot more than I expected. You might consider a gantry crane to aid in moving that backhoe. Mine is orange if that makes a difference.

You will want to use a C-clamp to secure the trolly to help provide stability if you choose the gantry crane option. Doing so may violate some rigging rule but it works for me.
