First dig with BX23S

Picked up a new BX this week and removed my first stump. Never operated a backhoe before so it was fun even in the wet weather. Have a few larger ones to try when things dry out a bit.

In the endless debate about whether a backhoe is worth the price of admission, nobody ever seems to count that into the equation. It is fun, isn't it?

I agree it is fun. A great gift idea for you to tell anyone asking is for a thumb. Makes it a whole new machine. I've had mine for almost 2 years now and I still find that every once in a while I need to stop and walk away from it for a few minutes. I'll be doing fine for an hour and suddenly I'm operating it like a monkey with a fork. UP instead of down, swing left vs right....a 5 minute break seems to make all the difference. Enjoy the machine, makes life a whole lot easier!

Been there, done that.
I seldom get to spend enough time to on it to develop muscle memory, but about the time I think I've got it down, my brain disconnects. Takes me a few to get back on track. Not sure I understand the phenomena, backhoeing seems to be the only area it happens to me.

As much as I’ve been around them, never operated a backhoe or excavator for digging. Driven a few and used loaders.

My neighbor has a BX TLB. When I bought mine, he said no need for a hoe as his key is always in it.

Several times over the years he’s suggested I take it for a project, but I’ve always resisted because I don’t want to break anything..

I know what you mean!

But with a lot of experience under my belt now, I have changed my tune and every time possible I just dig around a stump so I can cut it off below ground and not struggle with digging them out. Of course, I am referring to large stumps, 18 inches to 24 inches in diameter mostly. But even 12 to 16 inch pines too...

I opted not to get the Kubota thumb and cutting edge because I like the BXpaded ones. That will definitely be my ordered soon.

Congrats on your machine!! The fun factor alone is almost worth the price of admission, isn't it. The Bxpanded quick change adapter and their ripper tooth turned my BH77 into a whole new machine for taking out stumps and large brush/trees such as buckthorn. Pretty sure they'll do the same for your backhoe when you do get them.

I have the BXpanded under armour, backhoe quick change, ripper tooth and just ordered the receiver to move light utility trailer around from time to time. Bxpanded, Kens bolt on hooks, and I'm adding the fuel filter relocation kit from Bota products have all been great add ons!

I have 420 hrs on mine....
some hints..
1) inspect EVERY grease Zerk, clean off the orange paint and ADD grease then 'cycle' the levers several times. everyone finds 1 or 2 Zerks that STILL have factory paint on them.....

2) add a screen filter to the fueltank filler !! See picture for what STOPPED my BX23s this week. Don't know what it is other than 1/4" diameter, 1/2 bagel shaped plastic. Dealer will charge $400 Canucks for 3 hours to remove/clean/replace.......

I guess I’ll go with your idea of digging around it “by hand” since I did not purchase the back hoe. .

I’m starting to get a bit jealous here.. maybe the stump bucket will help a little in the future.
