HST transmission: do the transmission and hydraulic filter bases have a check valve installed? In other words, can I change the filters without draining the hydraulic fluid ?
Seems as if I cannot get the bucket to float, I have a cab tractor, so I'm not sure if something needs to be adjusted between the valve controls and the joy stick in the cab. Any ideas? Thanks

Not sure of your machine - but most do not have check valve, so it basically comes down to have new filter ready and old off .... drip drip .... and new on quick as possible.

The vacuum from air not being allowed in will only allow a little bit of oil to come out. People have place a vacuum on the fill port ........ and placed negative pressure in the system. I have taken the filter off and not had about 4 oz of loss.

As for float - throwing the joystick all the way forward - is that where "float" is located? IT does take a little umph to get past the detent ball, sometimes!

85 Hokie, thanks for you knowledge. Will change filters tomorrow. Boy, I pushed pretty hard on the cab joystick but no detent found. I have another brand compact tractor that does not take much pressure at all to get the bucket into the float mode. I'll try again tomorrow, I was afraid I was going to break something the last time I tried to find float.

Before horsing on the joystick too much, it might be worth looking at the valve itself and it linkage to the 'stick. As you say, the linkage may not be getting you to the detent.

Another common cause for lack of float is the end of the lift spool gets water/rust and junk in it, interfering with it's operation.

PS - - Hokie beat me to it.

You can change the hst filter without losing much fluid, few drips is about all-and what's held in the filter itself. Ain't much

pull a vacuum on the transmission case, and you give yourself more time to get the old hydraulic (right side) filter off and new one on.
