Autoparts store sells a box of assorted sizes of push pins. Think I paid $3 or $4 to replace some on the inner fender well of a work truck.

Yep, I have a box of them in my cabinet out in the garage. Can't remember where I got them but if you do a google search go can buy them just about anywhere.

My F350 uses 'em, as does my Rhino, and my EZGO. Most auto parts chains carry an assortment, so I always have some on hand. Saves an expensive trip to the dealer.

I needed some small flat washers and they were priced @ 3 cents each. Yikes!! I just drilled holes in a few pennies and they only cost me 1 cent each.

It is not illegal to melt, form, destroy, or otherwise modify US coins, including pennies, unless the objective is fraudulent or with the intent of selling the raw materials of the coins for profit. Projects that use coins as materials are entirely legal in the United States.

For years I used dimes to block off the air flow to the front brake cannisters on the big trucks I owned. Before ABS, brakes on the front axles of road tractors were a recipe for an uncontrolled skid in wet weather. That is gone by the wayside now (with the advent of ABS, but I still use pennies with a hole drilled in them as hydraulic flow restrictors in implements that require a slow descent (like hay mowers) where you don't want the cutting head to slam to the ground.
