after starting the tractor with the clutch in as I let out the clutch it starts to back up and when I push the foot peddle forward it still goes backwards . no neutral or forward

the only way to stop it is move the low or med or high shiftier to neutral when the engine is running

Don't know much about your tractor, but certainly suggest getting a Workshop Manual (WSM). I see one here:

I would first suspect a linkage issue, but there's many possibilities.
I agree with RCW. Did this start out of the clear or has it been a slow growing problem? Look a the linkage from the peddle all the way to the transmission. Look for rub marks, a bent rod, some thing that might be missing.

Assuming it’s an HST, because you say pushing a pedal and it goes reverse either way?!?

EDIT: I missed it in the title...yes an HST. Sorry about that....my bad...

Like BigG said - - definitely start to look at the linkage from pedal down. There's times they get bent.

A parts diagram might help too. Agree to legal, and enter your L5740 model number. There's 2 series, one being L5740-3. Look for speed control, others may help too.

yes it is a hst and I looked at the linkage all is ok and under sprayed with fluid film so everything moves very easy

I was thinking about unplugging the reverse and the forward plug on the solenoid's and reversing the plugs to see if it is a bad solenoid .

You have an electrical issue, the only linkage is for the Auto-Throttle. You are going to need a Work Shop Manual unless you are really lucky.

GOOD NEWS !!!!

Jacked up the tractor and put jack stands under the rear axel then with the help of my son on a creeper and a 6 " steel drift he taped the middle ( reverse ) solenoid as I pushed the go peddle forward neutral reverse . It took a while for the transmission to come out of reverse then after some back and forth with the go peddle it started to work as it should .
So we jacked it up and removed the stands and removed the jack then opened up the garage roll up door and I fired up the tractor and let out the clutch and it did not move until I pushed the go peddle in forward and drove it out of the garage .
After it was outside I drove up and down the driveway forward and reverse many times and all is good for now and I will exercise the tractor more now to see if this fixed the sluggish reverse solenoid and if not I will be ordering a replacement solenoid

We use this tractor for snow removal and in the summer I have used the rear drag blade to grade the back driveway and now I will drive it a little more to keep things moving

So thanks for the help

That is good news. I am glad that it worked properly for you. Your description of the fix may help others that encounter the same issue, so thanks for that.

New Guy here, Not new to kubota but new to the forums. Since there is no introduction thread I'm just jumping in right here. Yes I realize this thread is a few years old. If no action here I'll start a new thread, just thought this would be better.

I have 4 kubotas currently, Have had half a dozen others over the years. Irrigation contractor in New jersey, In the off season we snow plowed. Gave up plowing 4 or 5 years ago, still have some of the snow equipment. L series Kubotas with the factory cab and the Kubota 7 foot snow plow blade and subframe where the clean up crew on my 400 unit condo site I plowed for 35 years.

Anyway, to my problem which is exactly what the OP had. Looks like the OP hasn't logged in in a few years so I can't ask him how it all worked out.

L5740 HST gets stuck in reverse. Peddle in neutral machine travels in reverse, peddle in reverse machine goes in reverse, peddle in forward machine doesn't move. This happens randomly. Sometimes can run for 6 hours, sometimes 6 minutes. Once it happens there is no way to correct the HST operation. Shut down and come back the next day machine is OK till it happens again.

When the machine is running properly reverse pulses. Never a smooth, controllable reverse. 1 or 2 seconds of power then what seems like 1 or 2 seconds of coast.

I've always thought a stuck solenoid. Where is the solenoid located? Does a solenoid exist? Part#, parts diagram link, any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks, Jer

Interesting. I read the original thread, not knowing it was a few years old. Anyhow I wondered two things:

1) Is the reverse solenoid (center one as per the OP) externally or internally mounted (e.g. how easy is it to swap out),
2) Since it’s an electrical problem that can be corrected by knocking it loose (OPs repair method), is the repair itself temporal?

The WSM should address number 1 and your experience may suggest yes to number 2.

Good luck with it. Be sure to share your solution once you get it sorted out.

Best I can tell is there are only 2 solenoids/proportional valves. Not sure where the OP got a 3rd from.
forward and reverse Proportional Valves: TD170-59310 - kubota part number

This thread seems to sort it out pretty well:

On the 5740 these valves are on the right side of the machine, under the cab, down by the HST control pedal. They are behind a cover plate. I'll get to them tomorrow, remove and inspect. I doubt I'll find anything but I will swap them and see if my problems switch from reverse to forward. most Likely I'll have to change at least one of the valves.
