B7800 diesel oil

I am about to change the motor oil on my (new to me) B7800 and after reading about oil recommendations on the web I bought a gallon of Mobil Delvac Super Heavy Duty 1300 15W40 oil. When I look at the WSM (which I should have done first) it shows 10W30 or 10W40. Is that plain old motor oil?

Since it takes 4.3 quarts and I could not find a single quart of the Delvac (to add to the one gallon container), would Motorcraft diesel motor oil be OK? That one comes in 5 quarts. For now I will probably not put more that 50 hours per year on it, so I plan to change it once per year regardless of the hours.

The tractor is a 2006 model and has 368 hours.

One, you're in Houston, so cold weather is not a factor.
Two, only 50 hours a year. So I would not be too concerned. That you are asking says that you already know you are not supposed to mix oil weights or brands. I don't see the harm in your case given the low hours per year.

Most new Kubota manuals list either 10W-30 (factory shipped oil) or 15W-40, the oil should be CJ-4 class or better.

10W-30 is recommended for any temperature range the 15W-40 is not listed below -10C or 14F.

Many people also buy 5W-40 but this is not a recommended grade by Kubota.

The Ford oil you are looking at exceeds Kubota requirements it is a CK-4 class oil.

You always want to be using a diesel engine specific motor oil. It will contain certain additives that gasoline motor oils will not.

Look at the spec's for a B8200 and note the API service classifications CC, or CD.

API stands for American Petroleum Institute and the CC stands for combustion compression which is a diesel. I don't recall the CD but it is for a diesel too.

In addition to the correct weight of oil you need to get the correct API designation.

Another factor now having to be considered: The low sulfur diesel fuels make life easier on lubricants

Fuel:
A Cetane number of 45 minimum. Cetane number greater than 50 is preferred, especially for temperatures below
-20 or elevations above 1500 m.
A If diesel fuel with sulfur content greater than 0.5% (5000 ppm) sulfur content is used, reduce the service interval for
engine oil and filter by 50%.

Yes you can safely use it. Yes it will mix with Mobil. No it won't separate or turn into a pumpkin. Looking online it seems a little pricey though, considering Rotella T6 full synthetic is about $20/gal. That will mix also. If you buy it that way it's called a "blend" or "semi synthetic".
C stands for compression ignition (diesel). Second letter designation is CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4, etc., and I believe the newest is CK-4. It changes when the manufacturers or EPA throw out a new spec. Every time the second letter changes, it's supposed to supersede and include any previous specs.

For whatever reason all the Diesel oils at Walmart were one gallon in size instead of 5 quarts, except the Motorcraft. They had the Rotella T6, Mobil Delvac and a couple more - all 15W40. Will look at o'Reillys for the 10W30 Delvac

George, strange thing is that most of the automotive supply chains do not really stock too many 10w-30 oils for diesels. You may have to buy 15W-40 which is good to 14 F , which is well below freezing and Maybe will cover your use in TN. Your local Kubota dealer will have 10W-30 for your tractor. Rotella T6 is often available in 15W-40 in the automotive chains and is a top quality oil.

I stick with one brand and buy a large quantity as I have a number of machines then never worry about mixing and matching. Good luck in your selection, I also believe in changing it every year irrespective of hours.

I wonder where the OP will find diesel fuel with a minimum cetane of 45. I've yet to run across a pump that will guarantee/state it is 45 or higher.

In Texas I would stay with 15W 30
