Hello all.

I have acquired my Grampa’s old 1977 kubota b6000 4x4 diesel tractor. It’s beat up. I’d like to fix it. Currently I’m looking for the correct dynamo or alternater conversation kit. I’m not comfortable buying stuff on line because I haven’t worked on a tractor or diesel. I’m hoping with you guys help I can be lead twords the right way for parts. Local auto parts stores only carry so much. I called Napa last night they said they can get it if $163, forgot to ask if it was the original or converted but they did say it was rebuilt so I’m guessing converted.

Anyways thanks for reading any help would be appreciated!

On the B6000's there was no factory conversion from a dynamo to an alternator, so if you wanted to change it, you would have to make the parts.

Now why do you want to get away from the dynamo?

I don’t want to get away from the dynamo, from what I heard parts are hard to find for this tractor. Local auto parts stores can only order so few parts, I briefly checked out Steiner tractor and googled the parts, lead me to websites than from the looks of it only carry my glow plugs, clutch and fuel filter.

What dose the dynamo look like? A old school doorbell with 2 wires right?

First apologies they do have an alternator change over kit for that tractor but it ain't cheap!

Other option is a rebuilt dynamo
but little confused as they say they don't sell it online?
You could give them a call.

Yes the dynamo is the bell looking part with wires, right behind the fan.

Now why do you think you need one?
Have you tested it, doubt that you have as you didn't know where it was.

Testing it requires an AC meter, 28VAC is what you'll measure across both wires.

Wow you aren’t kidding, there not cheap!

I’m assuming I need one because my battery is dead over night.

No I haven’t tested it, I was going to pull it off and have orylies test it this weekend.

I can promise you O'Rielly Automotive can not test that charging system! You're wasting your time removing it and driving to town. They have a tough time testing a 12 volt battery. Besides that, you can test it right as it is.

You just need a simple, inexpensive multi-meter to check voltage at the wires.

Best to start understanding how the components work on your new tractor. You'll become competent as time goes on. Don't get the habit of replacing part without checking them first. Do a search for you tractor model charging system on this forum and you will find a wealth of information.

Like i said it's simple use a multimeter set on AC disconnect the 2 wires at the dynamo, place the leads on the wires run the engine, at mid to full rpm you should see 28VAC.
Check back with the results.
FYI: Removing the Dynamo and water neck (one part) is a task!

I won’t remove the parts.

I’ll test it when I get it started. I think it sat outside most of its life unknown how much it was actually used in the last 10-20 years. It last stared 2 years ago when I had someone jimmy up someone else’s jimmy, now after 2 years (and not having it at my place) I have forgotten how to start it, step day put a electronic fuel pump on it, he says I need to prime the fuel system. The diesel is 2 years old. It stared than but I can’t get the shifter to shift feels like it is siezed up or something.

I have a extra car battery I will charge up all night and try it tomorrow.

Another question, how can I get to my posts quick and easy after signing in? Instead of hunting it down?
