Hi all, I change the oil (Shell Rotella) and filter every 50 hrs which is twice a year on my BX1500. Kubota recommends every 100 hrs, but the oil sure is black at only 50 hrs. Just wondering if I am wasting money by my frequent changes or saving in the long haul?
Thanks,Jefferson

We have diesels from 23 to 85 HP and stick with the regular maintenance schedules. Diesel oil gets black pretty quick; nature of the beast I guess. We change oil in the M8540 every three hundred hours.

Same here on my M8540.
If you really want to know where you are at on your oil, have it tested.

One thing I learned in the Navy is that oil doesn't wear out, the additives in it might get depleted though. Filters will get clogged and require replacement or cleaning, depending on the type of filter.

We used to get our hydraulic oil tested once a year, and renevated if needed (ran through a big set of filters for twenty four hours). Then retested.

Enginge oil in a diesel does get dicolored quickly.

Getting your oil tested is the best way, but it might be more cost effective to just change the oil and filter. I change the oil in my L175 once a year, in the spring. I usually put around 50 or 60 hours on it mowing my yard or moving trailers.

I figure that after it has sat all winter, I want to get any condensation out of the oil pan.

I work for a diesel generator rental company. We change oil and all filters at 250 hours. That is 10 1/2 days running 24/7... We have over 20k hours on alot of our smaller units

The better plan is change it before the winter lay-up. That way the condensation and acids don't eat at bearings and journals as it sits all winter.

Then the first good spring use just vaporizes any winter moisture and you're set for the seasons use.

You are probably right on that. I went and looked at the hour meter yesterday and I only put 30 hours average on it per year, not the 50-60 I said in the previous post.

Skeets,

Mine has a belly mower that is a PITA to take off, and turf tires. Also, I didn't really have working glow plugs until this spring.

My blade is a snap coupler (not three point) one that fits my Allis Chalmers WD which always starts no matter how cold it gets, plus I have a set of chains to fit it, is it any wonder I plow snow with my WD?

No problem on the drifting! I use my Bx all summer and winter so I guess I'll stick to my 2 oil changes per year.10-30 winter 15-40 summer.

I have 2 30+ year old Kubota's and change the oil/filter every fall in both. One is a mower the other is a hauler with frt loader. I have use Mystic 10/30 year round for decades. Both have been bullet proof since birth except for a hydraulic pump in the 2250 12 years ago. Wouldn't own anything else.
