I have a B20 that was stuck in low range. After splitting the transmission we found the nut on the 4th shaft had back off and wouldn't let the low gear go back. We got new nut and put it all back together and it worked fine for about an hour. Then it did the same thing.
I'm thinking that nut needs to be peened in place. Does anyone know about this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No peening
Use loctite.

Thanks Wolfman, We did use loctite but it still backed off. Maybe it didn't get a chance to setup before we filled it with hydraulic fluid.

Not familiar with this instance, but isn’t there a lock-nut or fiber-lock available for this application?

What color or number loctite did you use?

Also look at the schematics very carefully as on part put in the wrong way will make things happen or not happen that should or shouldn't happen! :D ;)

The locktite was red like chapstick. Never used that kind before. Looked at the threads on the shaft and no sign of locktite, like it all washed away. I'll research locktite further. Thanks for the suggestions, Dallas

I personally use the liquid red 262
Clean both parts with brake parts cleaner
Put loctite on both the nut and the thread side, start the nut when close to bottoming out add another drop or two on the leading side of the threads tighten to spec.
Allow it to cure for a minimum of 24 hours before use.

If you post a picture or two while you have it apart and after you assemble the part I might be able to tell you is something's not right about it. ;)

Thanks Wolfman. What do you think about the #263? I was reading about the different Locktites and it said the 263 is oil tolerant . Also I will post some pics. I'll have to figure out how. Appreciate any input. I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks again, Dallas

The 263 is really good too, it's just hard to find most of the time.

If you have problems posting pictures here, send me a PM or email and I'll give you different ways to send them to me. ;)

Thank you I hope you got the photos OK. I ordered some 263 loctite and will do like you said about applying it and then wait 24 hours before reassemby. I don't think we #1 didn't clean it well enough and then didn't wait for it to set up. Thanks again for all your help.Dallas

Yes I got the pictures and I just need one more of the old nut if you still have it. ;)

I sent them again. One I have the old nut in my hand and others with it sitting on the shaft. It is pretty scarred up where a wrench normally goes.
Thanks, Dallas

I got them and got to the bottom of it.

Now onto the issue with the nut, I gave you sort of bad info earlier, that style of nut you do stake (peen) to the shaft.
That’s why the there is a thin edge on the one side of the nut.
I would get a new nut, clean it and the shaft with brake parts cleaner, use the Loctite.
Then after you tighten it to spec, you take a dull chisel and stake (peen vee dimples) in the thin part of the nut to lock it to the splines of the shaft.
I personally would do like 8 of them.

Hope that helps!
