Sure I can elaborate - the left hand lever controls the "shuttle", also called the reverser. Its linkage to the transmission can become worn or loose, preventing the gears from being positively engaged - hence stranding the machine in forward, reverse or neutral.
The shuttle linkage consist of multiple links, pivots, levers and pins - lots to get worn and out-of-tune. Look under the left floorboard while someone shifts the lever back and forth - see if you can see what's trying to move and whether it all does.
To make the forward-reverse linkage confusing to examine, it also functions to restrict going into reverse when in high gear. The linkage takes some study to figure out what's doing what.
I have workshop manual pages M.3-12 and M.3-13 that show the shift and shuttle linkages. The .pdf scans are too big to attach here, but if you send me your email I can send them that way. Dick B.
