Yep, it's always good to get a long neglected piece of equipment started again.

Any idea who make the dozer blade system? It looks kind of like a homemade system, but might be some kind if aftermarket manufactured unit.
Doesn't look like anything Bucyrus-Erie made back then though.

Good work, guy.

I think it's the original JD-supplied unit. There's a tag on it, I'll check and get back to you.

It’s rated for 28.7hp at the belt and 23.7hp at the drawbar. I am pretty sure that John Deere made the bulldozer blade for them and it was an option.

When I was younger & had more time, I often was selected to fabricate replacement parts for restoration of old equipment- metal working machinery, cars, locomotives, aircraft, tractors, slot machines, pinball machines, clocks, and maybe my favorite, a WWII Army Jeep, completely original. (paint, lettering seats, pioneering tools, tires, 30 carbine rack, tool kit, blackout light shields, with 13 miles on the odometer, and it ran!)
I love the fact you're bringing the old girl back to life, and hope you keep us informed. Great read so far!

Tag on the dozer frame says it's a John Deere Model 62.

Unwrapped about a pound of electrical tape this morning. YIKES!

Now you know what wore out the treads.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to touch anything mechanical, or call themselves mechanics.
No kidding. A fix like that should require a pound and a half of electrical tape minimum.

Got the wiring all replaced, added one of them new-fangled "fuse" thingamabobs, cranked it up and checked out the hydraulics, which I forgot to do last time I had it started.

After figuring out the valve setup it raises and lowers the blade frame, but EVERYTHING leaks and the fluid looks like chocolate milk. Add to my list: Remove, clean, dope and tighten all connections, drain and replace fluid, rebuild cylinders.

Doesn't appear to be charging (6.3v on the battery with it running) so I suspect the generator or regulator need some love. Regulator looked pretty new compared to the rest of the machine, but that doesn't mean much.

If it's been setting a long time, the generator may need to be polarized again.

According to Tractor Data the JD 420C is a 6 volt, positive ground tractor.

Skeets says you are gonna put Kragar mags and wide tires back on that thing instead of the treads. Any truth to that rumor?

Found some more presents when I drained the transmission.

Right side final drive off, wasn't too difficult. I'll start on the clutch pack but I have to knock off early today to go help a friend.
