PTO shaft cover, do you use it?

Curious. The used M9 I bought a few weeks ago didn't have one so I asked my dealer if he had one and he did and gave it to me. He told me quite a few buyers especially those that buy with a backhoe or other implements don't want the cover, which, I find to be necessary to one, keep the PTO shaft clean and greased (I put grease in mine before I put it on) and it keeps the shaft from rusting when I'm not using it.

So, do you use yours and if you don't why not?

Mine has had the PTO cover since it was delivered.

What I find that keeps the PTO shaft the cleanest and greased is the rubber nipple I keep on it when not in use.

I use mine for the same reasons I also use the dust covers on the rear and front hydraulic remotes.

Yes I use my cover on my PTO. My dad does not use one on his tractor.

I put Fluid Film on the PTO shaft when nothing is attached. That's it. I never kept the clear tubing that came on a new tractor once I took it off.

The Case and Deutz tractors have a metal shield that hinges up some that covers the PTO shaft. Nothing directly on the shaft.

I've never had a tractor with any rust on the PTO shaft. I'm not really sure how that cover make anything any safer. I think it's on there to keep rust off and protect it while in transport.

Mine is always on when the PTO isn't in use, mainly to keep the dust and grit off the splines, remember I live and tractor on dirt roads and my M9 cab has a 21 spline PTO, not a 6 spline.

my new tractor came with it on there - little rubber cover, and its all greased inside. Havent even used the PTO yet on the tractor. I do plan to use the cover anytime its not in use because it makes zero sense to not use it. Its the same situation with my stihl kombi system attachments - they come with a little rubber end to cover the shaft part of the attachment when its not in use, and I keep those covers on at all times the various attachments are not in use. It simply keeps dirt and debris from collecting in/on it and then later being ground into the shaft when connected.

Help clarify his statement for you and others...I know I was scratching my head for a second too, Use cover when not in use???

Would be better to call this the PTO spline cover.

I farmed for 40+ years and we never covered the pto shaft when not in use. We always kept the shaft clean and dry NO Grease. A clean shaft only requires wiping dust off to use with a rag and most all pto shafts are hardened and don’t rust.

I'll clarify: I thought we were talking about the guard above/sides of the shaft.

I took the 'guard' off as it was always in the way and I bent it twice. I always use the rubber cover after packing the shaft with grease. I also bought several other covers as they fit the flat face connectors perfectly, nice and tight, I wish they had a ring molded into them for a string or wire to hook to something to keep them dangling within reach for easy use.
