Looking for some recommendations for stain for my trailer deck. I’ve heard to stay away from Thompsons. Thanks

I just use linseed oil. Dump it on the wood on a hot day and brush it around with an old paint brush.

Our county has a recycle depot where folks bring in old paint, oil, etc. They put some out for others to pick up to use. I get my linseed oil there for free!

All the trailers we ever had were preserved with oil dripping ,or running out of what we tossed in it,,:D

Went to Home Depot and picked up a gallon of boiled linseed oil. It was 94 degrees today so I put on some sunscreen and got started. It coated the entire deck of my 20’ trailer with some left over. Thanks for the tip.

94 degrees??? Unbelievable. We've had over 9.4 inches of rain in the last week. Only relation to 94 I can come up with. Glad you got it sealed.

I had some Oak slabs cut at the saw mill and used carriage bolts to bolt them to the trailer after clamping them all together. I used that treatment once, sometimes twice a year and it lasted over 30 years. Even then, only one of the boards gave up. I then replace the deck with steel from a rock quarry. The beaver tail is lined with the metal from Leavenworth Penitentiary doors!

Tried stain once. Didn't last long. Next time it will be used motor oil if I can remember before I take my jugs to the used oil recycling!

I assume you treated the used rags properly. They can supposedly spontaneously combust if you wad them up or stack them.

I used a paint brush but I do appreciate the safety warning. I have never heard of that potential hazard. Scary.

I just picked up a new trailer that needs it.

A tip for you guys using oil. A good pump garden sprayer will also apply the oil and you can get the underside with it easily as well (real easy if you lift it up with your KUBOTA ;)). Then hit it with an old brush if it needs to be worked in. I am pretty sure the dry wood on the one I just picked up will pull it directly from the can if I stand close enough.

How long does the linseed oil need to soak in before you don,t get it on your boots and track it around to other surfaces ? Has anyone treated the floors of an enclosed trailer with this stuff ? I would like to do the top and the bottom as well.

Did my trailer a few weeks back after hauling the B1700 home. Ended up using Flood CWF-UV and applied 3 coats. First two got soaked in pretty quickly, the third took a few hours to dry. The can said to do multiple coats while wet. I was lucky and hit a couple days without rain. Put it on after dinner and it was dry to the touch by 9PM. With a 6x10 trailer you'r talking 45 min max to get the top triple coated. I had forgotten about linseed oil. May have to grab some and hit the underside with a sprayer.

I never timed the time it took linseed oil to be absorbed into the wood. I always applied it when the weather was hot and didn't need the trailer. It also depends on the condition of the wood. But I'd suggest applying linseed oil when you won't need the trailer for a couple of days, just to be safe with it absorbing completely.

I just treated both of my trailers to several gallons of used motor oil. The landscape trailer with oak decking soaked in 4 heavy coats very quickly. The atv trailer with marine plywood decking soaked in one very heavy coat. The first 2 coats I cut the motor oil with a dash of diesel fuel.

This is the first time I've used old engine oil and I'm very pleased with the results. I think all in all I used approx 6 gallons of oil in the process.

There's no way I'm going back to using "stain".

Used motor oil has many uses. I use it as an accelerant for my brush piles, use it on my trailer decks and use it in my shop oil burning furnace. None goes to waste...lol

Thin the boiled linseed oil with mineral spirits or turpentine to allow it to soak in faster. Do several light layers instead of one heavy layer to allow it to penetrate into the wood.

My son did the racks on his flatbed by mixing in some oil based stain with diesel fuel. It darken the wood nicely and still looks good after after being in the Florida sun for about 10 months.

Used oil, motor or hyd, works good to coat disk blades, box blades, any steel that contacts the soil. Hand sprayer does a good job.

I solved it a bit differently: Pulled off the rotten 2 by 8 boards... and replaced them with 2” by 8“ steel purlins from the metal bldg supply. Welded them together every few feet.... and painted them with 99-cent/can rattle-can black paint from Home Despot.... and have rec’d so many compliments on that trailer I thought I’d share the secret. 😉
