M7040 fuel separator

My M7040 seems to run fine, but I noticed the fuel level in the water separator bowl does not remain constant. It is usually about 1/2 full of fuel when the engine is running and within 3 seconds after turning off the engine the bowl fills up with fuel and will stay at that level until I restart the tractor, then is will drop again to half. I have changed the separator element and the spin on fuel filter and used the plunger on top the spin on filter to remove the air prior to stating the engine.

Is there something wrong?

Will the engine/injector pump be damaged if I continue to use the tractor?

Look for a restriction. Many have found it between the separator and the tank. The fuel line is probably collapsing or the fitting entering into the fuwl/water Sep has the clog

Something is wrong and I would not continue to use the tractor.

There is a hand pump on the engine to help you bleed the fuel system.

The next image shows the fuel lines which are likely the source of your problem. Loose clamps, cracked hose, worn through.

I once owned a M4900 with a similar water separator that acted similar. Local Kubota dealer service manager told me to check for restricted passageway in WS housing or clogged screen. I found a clogged screen on fuel shut off valve in WS housing, Cleaned screen fuel problem solved.

The O-ring on the separator can also be leaking and allowing air to enter the unit. (It's not necessarily a fuel restriction...but may also be an ingress-air leak.)
