My tractor wouldn't start recently. I replaced the starter with a new one and when I hooked the battery back up the selenoid kicked on. I figured it was the starter and had it bench tested and it checked good. I replaced the ignition module with a new one and that did not correct the issue. The battery is good. Any ideas?

You say the battery is good...how do you know?

The solenoid tripped, but it wouldn't turn the starter?

Batteries will show 12+ volts static, but not have any cranking amps to turn stuff over.

I would first get the battery load tested, an also remove and clean all four battery connections (2 hot side and 2 ground side).

Our member here 85Hokie would say all battery connections should be "bright and tight."

Betting you changed a good starter because of a bad battery or connections. Trust me, you won't be the first to do so.

Just guessing...but it's where I would start. I'd bet 50 guys had same issue here on OTT in 2018....

Good luck... And welcome to OTT! Great group we have here!

Sounds like your hooking up the power cable from the battery to the wrong lug on the starter.

Thank you for your response RCW. I had the battery load tested before I installed the starter and and it tested good. I did clean all the terminals/connections prior to placing it back in the tractor and I routinely hook it it up to a trickle charger when it's in the garage. Unfortunately it is a lawn ornament right now.

I did reverse the lugs to see what would happen and nothing fired. I had a good spark when switching it back but again only the solenoid tripped like before. I also tried bypassing the solenoid without success.

I forgot to mention that when the solenoid kicks on the key is not in the ignition? This is why I replaced the ignition module thinking it was a wiring issue. It still may be a wiring issue...maybe it's not ground properly? I am not sure how to properly check if the system is grounded properly however.

Post a picture of the connections that you are making to the starter. ;)

NJacobs -

The site doesn't allow photos until you get to 5 posts; you may need to post 1 more time before you can post a photo. Just make any comment to make the post - needs to be 10 characters or so.

You had taken care of some of the common problems guys/gals have, such as assuming battery is good/load testing, clean connections, etc. Good for you in that regard!

Something isn't right there, though..there's some good ones at electrical troubleshooting here, but I'm not one of them......

In another post, I'm going to have to tap into some of the "good ones at electrical trouble shooting"
