Do you guys use this on the older b models? The knob on my b8200 is stuck, and I think to figure out the issue I’d have to pull the valve cover. Maybe the cable is froze up? Thoughts?

The cable on my B7100 was froze up when i got it. A few zaps with WD-40 and working it back & forth and it is free like new now. I use it on every start up.
Although mine is a knob, not a lever, but same effect.

It should be easy to disconnect the cable at the engine end and see if it is cable or the linkage that’s stuck.

You can also just spray the linkage on the engine and see if it will work free by hand

I use mine especially if the battery is a bit weak from sitting too long

On the B7200 I had the cable was frozen up and the lever on the cylinder head was frozen up. It still started just fine through a very cold winter. Of course I made sure I had a good battery and I pre-heated the machine with a kerosene salamander heater. Oh, and 30 seconds of glow plug.

Later on in the ownership of this tractor I realized what that knob was supposed to do and freed it up. Yes, starting was a bit easier, but not so much that I would have torn the tractor apart to fix it if it stopped working again.

I would imagine that if you don't have a means to pre-heat the tractor the importance of a working decompressor would increase in an inverse ratio to temperature.

Take a picture of the starter, if the starter has replaced with the newer style starter the decompression Knob really becomes worthless because the newer starter spins faster and will spin just as fast under load. ;)

I didn’t get a picture of the starter, but I verified tonight that the cable is not froze up. The decompression mechanism is definitely froze up. I gave it a light tap with a punch to see if I could free it up but I don’t want to crack the valve cover. As of right now it has no problem starting in the cold so I think I’m just going to leave it. Maybe this spring I’ll pull the cover to see why it’s stuck.

Should I be able to pull the knob when the engine is not running or does this get pulled as it’s turning over?

You can pull it anytime really but can do damage.

Pull it out prior to turning key to the start position to allow engine to spin easily. Then push in when engine is spinning to allow tractor to start.

Cable was seized up on my 1980 B7100 when I bought it. Got a universal choke cable from Napa & cut sheath & inner cable to fit & it worked great for 3 yrs. Tractor has since been replaced with a B2320.

I do believe that the newer B7100's did not have a decompression Cable/knob, or at least the two I have do not have it. ;)

Mine does not have one either. That must be due to the improved starter? I have never had an issues starting even in cold weather. Except when I ran out of fuel one time.

Starter change was part of it and there was also a huge improvement in batteries during that time period, better CCA's in a smaller package. ;)

learning more every day. How can you tell if you have the new design starter?
