Tire Chains On BX2670

I'm helping a friend install a BX2763A snow plow on his BX2670.

I've told him that he will need tire chains and plan to order these for him because I can get a better deal than he can. His tractor has F & R turf tires, 18x8.50-10 fronts and 26-12-12 rears. It also has a MMM.

Today, I looked at a similar BX2680 at my dealer regarding chain clearance and things look tight between the rear tires and the mechanism that lifts the MMM. Of course the MMM will be removed when the plow is installed but the lift mechanism remains.

Anyone using tire chains on a BX2670 with turf tires? Are wheel spacers needed and available?

Why not remove the linkage? Actually, I'm pretty sure you have to in order to mount the quick mount that the plow mounts to. I had to do so. Also, wheel spacers are available. I ordered mine from Bro-tek.

I don’t use chains on my BX 2670 using my BX2760A blade. I have used it in snow & dirt. I use a 4’ box blade in summer & a 5’ rear blade in winter for rear ballast. My tires are turfs without fluid.

Assuming the BX2670 is nearly the same as my 2360, I’ve put chains on mine for 5 seasons without issue. Just keep them tight.

I had to chain up my old yellow tractor,, never found the need to on the BX thats including the first year we had it,, 34 inches in the driveway. She never grunted or slipped but then Im running R4's

I need chains, and someday may put fronts on also. Have avoided them so far.

I have only realky needed chains once on my BX2370. Storm started as rain, temp dropped below freezing then turned to snow. Layer of ice below snow. No problem going down hill. Needed multiple running starts with sand to get back up hill. Then put on chains in the snow.

I bought 1.5 inch wheel spacers and chains for my BX24 with R4 tires. I am not sure how guys are running chains without spacers. The inside edge of the tread is less than a finger width from the frame reinforcement that runs from the loader back under the floor plate. I do not want to risk catching a chain and doing damage to the tractor or chains. I got the spacers on Amazon for $40. They are 5x4.5 with 1/2-20 studs and are made for Ford and Jeep.

These are the spacers I have. There are at least 3 reviews from buyers who said they used them on BX tractors. I have not had a chance to install mine yet.

Interesting.

Those are much less expensive than the spacers supplied by Kubota and much easier to install.

I would avoid chains on the front tires of a 4WD tractor. When you turn, the front wheels are moving at different surface rates, and need to slip somewhat. Putting chains on will increase the resistance to slipping and thus increase stresses on the front gears. In theory at least...
In Winter, there may be enough slippage to remove most of the drag on the front tires when turning, but chains are meant to do the opposite - increase drag/traction. Going straight is probably ok, the issue comes about when you try to turn sharply in 4WD. For the same reason, one should never run in 4WD when on hard pavement in summer...

I just checked and it appears the rear wheels on my BX2660 are the same lug bolt pattern as my 1990 Jeep Wrangler - those spacers might work fine!

Been doing it for decades without issues.

FWA tractors are designed for FWA engagement on all surfaces except hard pavement and front chains in snow will still slip easier than (pick 'em) tires on just about any other surface except snow/ice.

I am no expert but conventional wisdom has always been to NOT put chains on the front of a 4WD vehicle. However, that being said, I have seen some equipment operated with chains on the front wheels of a 4WD without chains on the rear. So I think that I would have to agree with Sagor on this one.

Chains on all wheels of FWA tractors is routine and not damaging to anything, whether turf or snow.

And then there is the point that these tractors are bought to get a job done safely, and if front chains help do that, then any extra wear may be worth it to the owner. I use them on my B2650 for snowblowing a drive with a bank on one side.

Do the spacers cause interference with the MMM anti scalp wheels?

The spacers fit great. There is plenty of clearance now for the chains.
