Revive an old thread....

I’m getting ready to fire up this old burner...

I plan to pump water into it slowly from a side valve off the pool pump return line...

Question is:

Where should I come in or out of this boiler?

Im thinking come in from the bottom and out from the top...

Make sense?

The plan is to start a small wood fire and then add some pea coal and let that sucker burn away for 12 hours at a time....

Looks like when I get a good bed of coals I could prolly throw two or 3 gallons of coal in there...

I've never seen one, but as an OLD Boiler Operator please be careful with that little unit. make sure that a new and tested pressure relief valve is installed in the correct place in your piping. I wouldn't push the operating PSI over about 8 or 9 PISG on the loop.
Good luck with your project, but watch those old things can go BOOM in a blink of an eye.

but Im not planning on pressurizing....

I simply want to run water slowly in and out of it.... a coil of sorts...

to heat my pool water..

Test #1 today for my hillbilly pool heater...



I used a submersible pump with a T to divert some of the water..... so it would feed slower...



worked pretty dang good....



BUT...



it's still got a slight rust color coming out....



it was REAL bad when I first fired it.... let it run in the grass till it cleared out.. so I thought..



but I can still see it clouding the water orange/brown slightly when it hits...



Any idea what I can fill the upper (coil) chamber with to rid the rust?



I have some Phosphoric acid I may try.... I have a feeling most of the rust is on the bottom of the coil/chamber anyway...

Ive used that successfully for rusted gas tanks...



all thoughts welcome...

well,

the little boiler was a bust.... couldn't get it cleaned enough to stop it from passing orange water.... (cast iron water jacket)



It's now a chipmunk house...



this year I went big time.... bought a wood stove/boiler for $50.00 and cobbled together some 3/4" plumbing... of yeah... bought a hot water filter.... just in case...



preliminary tests are great... water is coming in 65 degrees and coming out 90 degrees F.



no smoke to speak of... burning hot...



I'm using a submersible pump with a by pass back to the pool... limiting the boiler feed.



very happy thus far.
