Hi, How is it possible to maintain a constant PTO speed and switch gears from fwd to reverse. I want to back up to my pond to mow but every time I stop it disengages the pto. Is this normal for a simple 2wd L185. Probably late 80’s w 900 hrs. I run tractors all the time at work but there they are electric clutches and hydro trans. Easy pleasey. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

Welcome to the OTT forum Scott.

When you say "disengages the pto" do you mean 1) that you have to turn the PTO back on, or 2) does it just mean that when you depress the clutch that the PTO stops turning?

If it is the first problem then that is NOT normal. If it is the second problem, then yes that is normal.

The pto will disengage when the clutch pedal is depressed. But the mower will continue to spin so you can just put it into reverse and when you let the clutch out the mower will get back to speed quickly.

You could also shift into neutral, let out clutch to bring the mower speed up again the depress clutch shift into reverse and mow.

I am assuming a shredder which has a lot of momentum but a finish mower I don’t know about but they should spin up easily
