Older L260 Starter

My sister and I bought a looks to be built in 1972 L260 tractor has a 2 cylinder diesel engine tractor is in great shape but the starter drive is bad I have taken it to 2 starter shops with no luck in getting it repaired I was hoping someone on here could point me in a direction to repair this starter or where I could find a replacement. New to the forum thanks for letting be a part of it have a great day everyone

I'd try another starter repair shop. If they say they can't rebuild it, I'd ask why. Doesn't really matter why, just interesting to hear their answer.

When you finally find a "real" repair shop you won't hear excuses!

I agree with Cat. I guess that they are afraid to get into something they haven't seen before.

You may be able to get a new one from the dealers.

Go to Kubota.com
Illustrated parts list
Accept the legal stuff
Type in l260
Find starter part number
Go to Messicks or Coleman or whoever you want
Search for the part number

Another choice to go at this. Looking at the Kubota parts site it looks like the starter assy is Kubota 15109-63013. That is a Denso 028000-2452 starter, 1.4KW, counterclockwise, with 11 teeth. It has a Hitachi solenoid. You would need to verify that these are the correct numbers.

If you are up to it, you could take apart the starter and examine for corrosion or worn brushes, etc. You would need to clean and grease it, adding dielectric grease to the conducting parts. Exploded parts diagram at the Kubota site.

A last resort would be to buy an aftermarket starter, which will not be a new Kubota or Denso starter.

Save your time and fuel and throw an aftermarket starter on it from ebay for $90, unless you have time and money and like sticking with OEM good stuff. Problem is no one keeps parts for most small stuff these days as it's not economical to repair.
