I am trying to remove filter but having no luck. Filter has what looks like a spanner ring at base. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do.

Seems to be common problem based on my reading of numerous threads.

Have you tried a pipe wrench near base? I have a large pair of groove joint pliers I use when they are a pain. A last resort is to drive a large screwdriver through it to use for holding and leverage.

Some with more first hand knowledge will be along soon to offer advice.

Good luck.

Go to an auto parts store and buy a Strap Type Filter Wrench like in the link I have listed. Slip the strap over the filter and turn the metal square until the extra strap is wound up. Use either a open ended wrench on the tube or a ratchet or breaker bar in the end. Make sure you have the strap slid on the filter as close to the base as you can.

Two methods I have used are a chain wrench, or using a punch to tap on the slots at the base. If you can get an air chisel on the slotted area that would work also.

I've used both conventional oil filter wrenches and strap wrenches without trouble.

If possible, place the wrench near the base to prevent collapsing the filter.

Kingrock, welcome to the forum! You will get a lot of good advice here. How much room do you have to get on the filter? The one BAP hyperlinked is one I have had good luck with, as it will frequently get into tighter spots than other designs. You may still crush the filter before breaking it loose, but if you get the strap as close to the engine as you can then you shouldn't crush it. Also, it may help to wrap a single layer of that no-slip, rubber type shelf liner around the filter and under the strap. I should have found a link to my fav before posting this, and I will try and edit it if I can find a link. It has a set of three jaws and a 3/8" square receiver. You place your ratchet on it and when you give it the lefty-loosy turn, it torques the jaws down on the filter. The problem I had to watch for is that the jaws are not as sturdy as they should be and on a really tough break, the jaws will spring and bend slightly. I fixed it by hose clamping the jaws to the filter before removing. Good luck; let us know.

For lack of a strap wrench or other device that fits, I have driven a screwdriver through the body of the filter and then push on the screwdriver handle to get the filter started. It's a desperate measure and it's messy, and a little hazardous because of the sharp edges generated by the puncture, but it does work.

I've got a scar on my middle finger from this procedure when I removed the oil filter from a Mustang many years ago. I cut my finger on the screwdriver exit hole.

After trying to remove filter with a 24" pipe wrench and not having any luck contacted local dealer who suggested using an air chisel to break it loose. After a few raps with chisel spanner ring turned enough to get off by hand. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions

Glad you got it unstuck. Where I've had room I use an old leather belt. As I pull up on the end, it tightens on the filter and in most cases spins it off. Had an old 80's Fiesta that this worked wonders on

Air chisel will take them off in about 5 seconds or less. But you have to be careful because it can also damage the transmission case if you "miss" the spanner ring....

I don't call it an air chisel. I call it an "assault hammer".
