I have an L3901 with R4's on it. I like the tires but find they are limited in mud and deeper snow. On my past tractors and my B7100 I have had R1's. They are narrower (different rim required) yet they go through mud/snow better. On the downside the fronts are narrow and have less surface area. When I fill the FEL bucket and lift they sink in. My rears are filled and I use lots of counter weight. My question is.... Do any manufactures make an R4 size (27×8.50-15) (15-19.5) with deeper lugs similar to the R1 ags? If I could find such a tire I could get the width flotation of the 4's and the grip of the 1's. If this makes sense... I looked into buying R1's but have to buy tires and rims. If anyone knows of a good r1 type lug that would fit on r4 rims it would be appreciated. Maybe I'm asking for something that doesn't exist.

What you want is like mine has on it, an R3 flotation or loader special tire (yes turfs are R3's too), they are an R1 with twice as many lugs so a smoother ride and more traction, the rub is finding the right size that will fit your tractor and finding the right match for the fronts too.
One really good option for the R4's is to have them deep grooved, this will give you much better traction is more situations.
For mud and snow use you really should look at a good set of chains for it!

What sizes do you have on yours? The time will come when I have to change and, rather than experimenting on my own, maybe your setup will work for me. I am probably looking at new rims anyway as I don't want the responsibility of someone changing my 16.5 fronts
I looked at the tire chain option. On an L3901 with R4s there is only about one inch between the tire and inner fender on both the backs. I would rub or damage the inside of the fenders. I looked at moving things around to get a wider setting but there appears no other combo of rim that is wider. Spacer maybe??? I would think I should have at least three inches between tire and inner fender for chain clearance (in case they loosen up a bit) a little slack could tear things up quickly.
Cutting grooves into the lugs is an idea. Like syping on steroids so to speak. That may be an option since my buddy has a syping tool.

Maybe you could find an aircraft tire with the correct circumference after they put bars molded on the retread.
You'd have weight, size and grip with no flats.

I needed good traction in the mud because I have a wet lands area on my property and I ended up trading the R4s in for the R1 tires but I went with the Radial galaxy 320/85R24 rears for extra traction in the mud. I have the rear tires loaded and the front tires foam filled it pulls around in the mud way better than the R4s did.
Here's how they looked new, they fit perfectly on the factory rims and are a good bit wider than the 11.2 bias tires it came with but work with the factory ride height so you don't bust up your MFD.
