I posted last week about my L185 not starting after new rings, injectors and starter.
Problem solved but now I have a new problem. We pull started it and it started but after about 2 minutes the hydraulic pump go so hot it started smoking. I pulled the pump off and it not starts right up. The pump was dragging it so hard it would not let it start. SOOOO now, what could cause a blockage on the high pressure side? The lift would not move at all. I did check to make sure oil was getting to the pump and that was fine so I'm assuming there must be a blockage. Have any of you seen anything like this?

If you were messing with any of the hydraulic lines or valves you could have created a condition called dead heading the pump. The pump is a positive displacement pump so for each revolution of its shaft it must move a certain volume of oil. Note the word must.,

You may or may not have a relief valve in the circuit you have created but likely not.

Your pump may be destroyed based upon your description.

Hydraulic systems are not the ones who will tolerate "Lets try this and see!" In a second, expensive parts can be destroyed.

More of your story on what was done to the hydraulic circuits will help give you more complete advice.

Does the pump turn easily by hand?

The pump is really just a couple of gears so you should be able to easily rotate it by hand.

Does the tractor have a loader? If so, do you have it removed?

It doesn't have a loader but after sleeping on it ( a long time thinking be I could go to sleep) I'm betting that there was a loader on it before I bought it. ( I bought it not running). I'm thinking that the block in the line which has two plugs in it was the supply to a loader and when they removed it the plugs blocked the line completely. I hope I'm wrong but if so I agree the pump may be toast now. If this is the case, I am at least glad it didn't break a timing gear. If it did toast the pump, I'll probably put a pump on the front of the crank to replace. I think I can do that cheaper than a kubota pump but time will tell.

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions.

Followup : tonight I removed the block in the pressure line and made a new one with open flow through it. Now the tractor starts very easily and sounds good. 3 pt works like it should. I didn't have time to put a load on it but hopefully I didn't fry the pump.

Thanks you all for your great advice.
