Hello all,

I'm inheriting a B6200 4x4 (not sure of the exact year) that's lived a very poorly maintained life. It was most recently being used at a ranch until it wouldn't start one day, and it's been sitting for a few years since. It cranks, but does not start. No smoke when it cranks which I think is a lack of fuel? I replaced the fuel filter and discovered that at some point someone removed the filter in such a way that the metal top of the old filter remained and the next filter was just jammed in and crushed by the bowl. I'm sure the filter was being bypassed and there was some fine sediment in the bottom of the bowl.

I'm guessing that sediment was going into the injection pump and injectors. I'm not sure what I should be seeing, but I'm getting weak spurts of fuel from what appears to be a boost pump before the injection pump. I was also able to get weak spurts of fuel at the injectors when I loosened the lines there. Symptoms haven't changed now that I have fuel at the injectors.

Any ideas what my issue might be or how to further diagnose? I'm guessing that at the least the injectors are clogged, but the injection pump might also be bad. One more caveat is that someone used ether to try getting it running again  Is there a strong likelihood of a cracked piston?

Pull the injection lines off the injection pump and turn the throttle to high, and crank, you should get about an 6" fountain out of the pump and all the fountains should be at about the same height.

If that's good then pull the injectors and with a injection line mounted away from the motor, attach an injector to the injection pump leave the injector loose for a couple cranks to bleed air then snug tighten and crank using a piece of card board under the injector, you should see a nice spray pattern out of it.

You could also do a compression test and that will let you know if there is a compression issue to why it won't start.

Check that the decompression lever is fully returned, it may have been pulled when it didn't start last time and may be stuck in that position. Follow the cable back to the tappet cover and manually operate it to ensure it's not holding the valves open.

Ok good tip! I'll see if this can tell me anything.

The decompression lever is working correctly. I'm guessing the only way to check compression is by pulling the injectors?

Cheap (but effective) harbor freight kit that I have, has both the Injector adapter and the glow plug adapter. ;)
