switching between bar and turf tires....

Hey Guys, as I took delivery of my tractor last Nov and I live in Western NY... I never cut the grass just went right to snow season. As I am now happily using my toy all around my land, I notice my bar tires like to rip the ground alot. So I was wondering, do most of you more experienced folks switch tire styles for the different seasons? If so, as I can see the financial advantage to switching tires on the same rims...I also see the pain in the a** part of it and the advantage to having a second set of rims. So who prefers what procedure?

Thanks for your help guys....I am really enjoying this forum as an educational tool with my 1st tractor.

IF I was going to do it, I would have another set mounted on different rims. I think you will find that the tires will require different rims anyway.

you will need a new set of rims to go from AG to Turf or vice versa - and unless you have a deep pocket book, be sitting down when you see the cost!

Ag on those machines are typically uncommon - turfs and industrial are more common.......

the industrial tires would be your best choice all around, good grip on most surfaces and will not tear up soil...unless hard turn or wet ground.

I'm switching from AG's to R4 Industrial tires to save my lawn. However, I don't mow with my B-Series tractor, I have a G-Series for that. If I was in your situation, you may want to consider aggressive turf type tires with a combination of flotation and grip that will save your grass and still function well in snow.

Might be true for the larger BX models, but on the BX18__ series, the standard options are bar (aka, ag.) and turf--no option for industrial tires on the "build my Kubota" site, nor from my dealer.

I went with turfs on my BX1870 out of concern for my lawn, and performance has been good in the snow, though I do end up using the diff. lock some, in addition to 4wd.

If you price another set of rims/tires from your dealer, be sure to get the "whole goods" price as opposed to the "parts" price--could be a significant difference.

Those look like almost a hybrid between Ag and Ind. The bars do overlap in the center section, but significantly less than on most Ind tires. Curious what you find out about rim compatibility.

I can’t answer your rim question but are you mowing in “4 wheel drive” or with the front wheelsengaged? I mow with my L3800/ R4 tires and the only time I notice them messing up my yard is when I forget to disengage the fronts. Also, do you take off your FEL?

If you have a BX1880 you have R4's they didn't come with R1's.

Now for snow, turfs (R3's) work just as good as industrials (R4's) if not better.
So in all logic you only need a set of R3's for the entire time.

I'm sure you could find a tire manufacturer that has turf tires to match your existing wheels. However, you may want to try a few things with your existing setup first before you invest in new tires. If you're mowing with your FEL on, you should consider taking it off. It adds a lot of weight to the front causing your front tires to plow the grass. If you leave FEL on, install ballast in the rear to take weight off your front tires. Also, try letting a few pounds of air out of the tires so they float a little more.

Those are bar tread tires (similar to Ag's, but a bit less aggressive). I had the same tread design on my BX23 and it mowed fine and didn't tear up the grass. As mentioned above, make sure you aren't in 4WD and take the loader off when mowing. Unless you are in some pretty wet turf, they shouldn't be tearing it up.

Yes, i do have an 1880... If i didn't type that earlier. I haven't actually mowed yet. I plan to tomorrow. It was occuring while i was moving stuff on the property with the FEL. I was in 4wd. I have some decent hills on both sides of my house to get up. I will attempt to mow in 2wd and see how it goes. And yes i just took off the FEL to mow. Thx for all the ideas guys.

You do have R4's as mentioned. I mow with them on a BX2360 in upstate NY.

Other than keep it in 2wd, I think you'll be fine.

I sometimes tear up a corner in the lawn where it's real steep, and I need to get around 2 trees. My 2wd JD425 with turfs did the same thing.

Makes two of us!!
I still would try them first.
I mowed with a geared Speedex for years. Same little steep corner was a problem for me. Other hilly parts were fine if I didn’t need to turn tight.
Slope doesn’t show well in photos, but this is my little corner.. Mow it all with BX, and nothing is flat. We’re still a week or two from mowing, but I do skin this one spot around the little sugar maple on the left and red pine on the right near the woods.
Nothing damaged like that in the rest of my lawn, or the other 2 lawns I do.
