I'm installing a new engine in my L3240. In the process, the front wheel drive pilot shaft pulled out and it's rear coupler dropped. My question is, how do I attack this thing. It appears that the clutch housing should be separated from the mid case. Would that expose the shaft connector at the rear end of the pilot shaft? I suppose the best question is, am I getting into a one eyed shite storm?

You will want to split it at the Mid Case and Transmission (rear end) seam.

Shown without rear axles attached, I guess for clarity, as there is no need to do that for this split.

The front drive spline is the bottom one.

That's the perfect picture. Worth 1000 words. I wasn't aware that the propeller shaft could pull out. I figured there would be something in place to cause that not to happen.

Thanks Sean,

Mike

Yea was always stumped that they didn't pin the coupler to the shaft, but I now know that doing that will cause undue wear on the shaft so they leave it floating.

Remove the seal and bearing from the housing, get a 5/16 rod approx 24" long and a bright flashlight. Shine the light through the opening while using the rod to pick up your coupler and lay it straight in front of the rear section of the shaft. Remove the 5/16 rod and use your propeller shaft to slide into the coupler and then raise it to the rear section engaging coupler onto the spline. I have had them slide off and drop several times while changing the seal.

Sometimes you get it on the first try, sometimes it takes several tries, but it beats separating the mid-case from the transmission case to reinstall it.

Can you point to the coupler in the 2nd picture of post 2?... Just curiosity on my part.

Thanks

I was not sure that was possible.
Excellent advice! ;)

Anyone have a link for a wsm for a l3240?
I have several different WSM's for that series depending on your exact model, either post the serial # or send me a PM with it and I'll pass on the right one if I have it. ;)

TxBigRed, I have that workshop manual downloaded. If I can figure out how, I'll email it to you. PM your email address and I'll give it a try.
