Torque Wrench(es) and accessories...?

Hi All...

So I have a Kubota M5-111 and about to order a Grand L3560 or L4060.
Also have Land Pride RC4615 (15' batwing) and an RCF3696 (8' mower) and will be getting a 72" Rotary for the Grand L.

Both Tractors have front end loader and etc.

I am a novice on tools and service, so please be detailed and specific...

Although my Kubota dealer does all service on my machines, just to have around what type, size and etc. torque wrench and etc. sockets? and accessories should I buy to have around to check lug nuts and any other stuff....I do have an air compressor and impact but seems form what Ive read I need to check and turn to a specific amount of torque...?

Also just got the Dewalt 20v Lithium Grease gun with lock n lube for my greasing...

Any advice on how and what to buy would be great..thank you.

No need for a super high quality setup, yes I like quality, but there is a limit, your not building a race engine, your maintaining a tractor.

Just poking fun - I've watched your agonizing...you'll pick a good one I'm sure, and I wish you the best with it!!

Honestly, I just use Harbor Freight torque wrenches. Have 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" @ $10 each. Also have a couple "better" Craftsman at 1/4 and 3/8" I got cheap, but they're not much better than HF.

Like me, you're not torqueing head bolts that have to be exact. If it's 90 or 100 ft/lbs makes no difference.

For the size of your machines, I would look for a 1/2" wrench.

You'll need some sockets - I prefer 6 point. I've never bought HF sockets, as I have a ton collected over the years. Nothing special, and many came in sets.

Probably start with sizes from 1/2"-1" and 14-26mm to start - whatever works in a set of 1/2" drive sockets... add as needed one at a time. (I think the 32mm I needed for mower was $5 at Lowes (Kobalt))

I'll give a go at your questions. Depending on what your going to be doing it will vary. For the general service and check I have a 1/2" torque wrench that goes from 45-300 ft/lbs. Also a 3/8" that goes up to 50 ft/lbs. Mostly every size socket and wrench up to 1 1/8". If I need something different then I check with the relatives. Unless your a mechanic or an avid back yard mechanic there is too many items to get. Hope this helps you.

Torque wrenches work best in the middle of their design parameters. A 45-300ft/lb wrench doesn't work well at 50 or 297.....

Not sure what calls for 254-297 (wheel studs/lug nuts?), but I would be happy with putting some ass behind a 2-foot breaker bar...perfect!!

Would certainly beat the cost of a 3/4" torque....

But would I still go bicman's route with a 3/8 and 1/2". If you need sockets so large they don't come in 1/2" drive, just find a 1/2x3/4" adapter.

Sears TWs are ok and prbly as cheap as Id go for daily use. What youre trying to do in most torque instances insure similarity between all the bolts not dead on precision. Like someone said, the diff between 90 and 100 on lug nuts isn't critical but making sure they are all the same keeps them from walking loose. For sockets Id suggest decent impact sockets. Chrome sockets are nice but when you start getting into big things the chrome ones get expensive and cheap ones flake. Nothing like slicing a finger on chrome plating that's coming off; sharper than a razor blade.

Ccs - this is some of my socket stuff, but I don't have anything as big as your M5 111.

SAE is one side - MM on the other...

I think largest on my 'Moline is 1 1/2". 32mm largest other side.

Most of those larger ones are my grandfather's S K socket set. 12 point Sockets and 18" breaker bar left side of picture. Guessing about 70 years old.

You'll want extensions of 2 lengths - 6 and 12" or so. A couple of breaker bars - 18 and 24".

Here's a partial list of what you might have in the barn for tractor and implement maintenance. RCW's picture has a lot of this


Assorted screwdrivers

Assorted adjustable (crescent) wrenches

Assorted locking pliers (vice grips)

Metric and SAE box end wrench sets

Metric and SAE socket sets

set of deep 6 side metric sockets

24" breaker bar with at least 1/2" drive

Multimeter

dual fuel space heater, especially if you don't have engine heater for winter

air compressor

battery jumper/emergency start unit

trouble lights

a box of rubber exam gloves

2 low profile jacks


Other things to consider:

2-3 ton engine hoist/crane. These are unbelievably useful for maintaining implements.

5/8" x 20 ft trucker chains

Bench grinder


These are just suggestions. Everyone's needs vary.

In order to get that high of torque you would need a 3/4 torque wrench.

The other setup doesn't look too bad for a starter set.
I would add in some large wrenches and large impacts sets from Harbor freight.

I have wrenches from 1/64 (Yep that tiny) up to 2 1/2"
I also have some adjustable ones for the really big stuff up to 8", they are a pain in the back side to work with.
You can never have too many wrenches!
