Are fork extensions permitted where a load is longer than the forklift forks?
Linda,

permitted is a unique word:D - many of us will try anything to get a job accomplished:) What exactly are you trying to move?

Are these on a fork lift? OR a Front end loader? Are these in place of a the bucket or are they bolted to the front bucket?

Something that is lightweight but large could use extensions easily to prevent damage to the object itself - however something heavy will place a large burden on the forks where they connect, and possibly on the machine itself.;)

The OSHA rule is they cannot exceed 1.5 times the length of the forks. That***8217;s on a forklift. That being said, if what you***8217;re trying to lift is within the capability of your tractor, go for it. Keep in mind that the weight further out reduces what you can safely lift.

Yeah but the extension length cannot exceed 1 ½ times of the length of the original fork. You should inspect forklift fork extensions for wear and make sure they’re not damaged or cracked, etc. I’d be more concerned of overloading the forks, you are moving the load center quite far away from the piece of equipment.

I extended my LP 42" forks to 60" which is well within the 1.5 rule and used it to unload concrete steps of 1100 lbs and then to put them in place.

Of course I made sure not to lift them very high or go very far with them and to make sure the ground would support it.

The big worry was to make sure I had enough counter weight on back to keep all 4 wheels on the grown. Having 4 wheel drive was also very helpful.
