BH77 Controls too short

Hi all,

New here. My new B2650 was delivered today and while I was checking over it I noticed two issues with the BH77 backhoe:

1) It appears as though the backhoe controls (sticks) are very short in length. Does anyone know if perhaps Kubota uses two different sets of controls for L vs B series? I thought that I had noticed in some images that the B series controls were longer (possibly because you sit pretty high on the reversed ROPS version)? I'm only 5'10" and I have to crouch way over to reach the short controls.

2) the Boom swing to the left is much slower than swinging to the right (like half as fast). Could this be some adjustment issue or simply because it's brand new?

I did search this forum for "BH77 Contols", but didn't find anything.

As for the swing left and right - I would suspect something is amiss - could be in the valve, would not think in cylinder - since it is single double acting, as all are.

Get your dealer on the horn - AFTER you play with it some more, check out everything while brand new.....fluid levels, bolt tensions....etc

Yes, they only measure approx 10" above the control box. I know I've seen some that were substantially longer. Just can't find any info on them, or parts diagram for BH77.

And the BH77 uses two swing cylinders. Good advice on checking over the whole machine. Thanks

I see that it has twins .....one of them may be at fault then, I would work it more, if still not satisfied - get the dealer involved.

How much longer would you like the controls to be? I would think getting the handles off would allow a longer extension to be placed on - either straight or slightly bent towards operator. Are the knobs screw on? Or friction fitting? If screwed on, it would be an easy fix

Well, after some more searching, I think I found the answer. There are two different sets of sticks (like I thought).

The short sticks are for the models with the integral seat. You are supposed to have the longer sticks with the bend for models with the shared seat.

Hi Dirtydeeed, I have your same setup. I never noticed how far away the levers feel until my dad came over a few weeks ago and was using it and complained about this..... He reached down and slid the seat forward with the lever under the seat.... I practically hugged him because I NEVER would I have ever thought of using the seat adjustments to make it more comfortable..... IDK but it's like facing backwards i kind of forget it's the drivers seat spun around, but the adjustments are still there.

Give that a try i think it will position you much closer to the sticks and you will find it more comfortable. It is a pain because when you spin back to driving you have to adjust back to driving position but it does definitely help BH usage.

Thank you both for the reply. I figured that's what happened. They gave me the setup for a cabbed or "L" version. I should have looked more closely when they were putting the machine together at the dealer. I did find the correct part numbers for the longer (and bent) controls. I think they will do the trick.

I wasn't sure if they offered two different lengths to the backhoe platform as well (longer one for attached seat). But judging from Mike's pic, mine looks the same with that one additional plate on the floor/platform closest to the seat.

Since it is a brand new machine, maybe the dealer will do a free swap out for you. I would check with him anyway.

New controls installed. They look much better (taller and with more of a bend towards operator). Haven't had a chance to use them but I think they will be much more comfortable.

So, did the dealer trade you without charge?

yep. They didn't realize there was any difference so I sent him pics from one of the forum members along with the parts diagram showing the two types of control sticks.

We're good to go.

It's good to know that there are still dealers out there that do what's right. I'm glad that you were able to get the dealer to step up. That kind of service deserves reward in the form of referrals and using his dealership as your source for future purchases.

I would, but they are dropping the Kubota line Jan 1. Too bad. They made me a fantastic deal. $3,300 less than another dealer.

haven't had enough seat time on it yet. Only had the hoe on for a little bit to work it a little me. It seemed a bit better, but I'll dig into it further now with the correct control sticks. Perhaps, I wasn't pushing the sticks hard enough since they were much shorter.

I realize this was an old question but I really haven't had a chance to use the hoe until last weekend. I think the swing is much better now since installing the new sticks. When I removed the old ones, the left stick appeared to be installed slightly out of whack. Meaning the sticks were off center a bit. I think what was happening is that I was actually getting two boom functions when I moved the stick to swing left.

Last weekend I had a chance to use the hoe on a large pine blow down for a neighbor. I broke a bunch of roots and cleaned off the root ball to get it out of the ground (12"bucket would have been better for that). I was impressed with the power of the BH77, I managed to pull the root ball out of its hole with the hoe. Honestly, the hoe moved the rear of the tractor around (too well) and I had a hard time keeping the tractor in place. I wish the outriggers were wider spaced. Neighbor has a L3301 and it kind of took both machines to push the root ball to its final resting place.
