Grand L series HST speed select question??

I recently Test drove a grand L - 3560
The speed select lever (L - M - H) was nothing short of a lottery to get it in to a speed or neutral in between
Made no difference what I did or didn’t do, getting it positively into a speed or neutral was a game of luck.(dealer even tried)

Question
Was this particular machine just out of wack? ( brand new on the lot) or are the select levers known to be sensitive or ‘touchy’.
I asked the dealer and he just mentioned - “it’s just new and tight. “
?

I have had my L3560HSTC for 3 years now and I agree that the speed selector is poor to say the least. I have a lot of problems with it when I shift from M to L and when I go down hill (especially with a load) it jumps out of gear and into N. Really scary when that happens. I also am confused with the rabbit/turtle speed control on the column. The owners manual says you can shift at any speed, but do they mean speed or RPM??

I would say that something has not moved in a while, good shot of oil/spray along the linkage may help.

Do not think it needs to have clutch used for that - most new do not need clutch.

When sitting still - sometimes is "goes" into gear better if you roll forward just a bit.

What you are describing is NOT typical for a new machine.

My L3560HSTC was simular new and has gotten somewhat better (close to 70 hours). And I agree... it has jumped out of low a couple of times (not fun). Make sure it is fully engaged, and even then I am not sure why it pops out. Mine is at the dealer getting the front snow blower set up and installed (I bought a used one with about 16 hours on it for close to half price). While there, I asked them to check out the problem of it coming out of low gear.

The turtle/rabbit lever can be changed at any speed or RPM. I like that control. It comes in handy.

I have a similar issue with mine. It never wants to go into gear easily and never has. I always depress the clutch when changing gears but lately I have found that shifting without depressing the clutch works better. Sometimes I have to move forward and few inches and it will go into gear. It's aggravating.

The 60 series tractor is newer then the 40 series, but for the 40 series the book says, "The range gear shift can only be shifted when the tractor is completely stopped and the speed control pedal is in the neutral position.

IMPORTANT: to avoid transmission and shift linkage damage when shifting: Completely stop the tractor using the bake pedals. Do not force the range gear shift lever. If it is difficult to shift the lever into L,M, or H from neutral position:

On slopes be sure to set the parking brake before starting the procedure.

(1) Slightly depress the speed control pedal to rotate the gears inside of the transmission.

(2) Release the speed control pedal to the neutral position.

(3) Depress the clutch pedal, wait for a moment and then shift the lever."


I follow these guide lines and have no trouble shifting the range gear shift lever.

To be honest, I don't shift my L3560 very often usually keeping it in M, but I've never had a problem shifting it going into either L or H. I always do it stopped (no motion) and back off some on the RPM.

The rabbit/turtle can be switched while moving, but I usually slow down before doing so. I don't like the sudden surges when shifting it while moving at faster paces. I guess I just like to take it easy on things and baby them a little...

The L60 series operates the same regarding shifting ranges.
My 4060 shifts real sloppy, and it’s easy to go past a range and into neutral. My previous L3410 shifted much more precisely, and had a slot pattern so you don’t shift through a straight line.
With the hi-lo shifter on the column I rarely use the H-M-L shifter.

Yes the 60 series HST is the same as D2 describes, except no clutch, and if it doesn't shift easily, rotating the gears a bit usually works fine. I have close to 300 hrs on mine, and it slipped out of gear once, but I had the impression it was my fault. The display on the panel can show the letters L M etc even when it is not all the way in gear, so I now wiggle the lever to make sure it is in place. Mostly it stays in M, so I have to make an effort to run it around in the other ranges to keep it lubed.

The B2650 has a different HST, but it too can require fiddling to get the gears to mesh when changing ranges.

I have the L3560 - 40 hours. Zero issues with shifting. Weird for you they are having issues. That being said I will remain cognizant for errors based on the reports in this thread. I have shifted several times in many situations to allow my tractor the settle time in the first 50 hours. Different slopes with different loads in different gears. I will keep everyone informed and consider myself lucky.

Coming to a complete stop makes it easy to go between gears. I have only had if kick out of "M" when my leg bumped the selector lever.

I've had mine to the dealer a few times and always complain about it jumping out of gear, they tell me it is my fault and nothing is wrong with the tractor. Sorry but I am very careful about shifting as I usually use M, but when I shift into L, I too wiggle the shifter to make sure it is in gear. Sometimes it jumps out and sometimes it is fine. I just never know when it will happen, usually it is with a load so I am more alert and have my foot on the brake pedal in case something happens.
