My BX2230 engine idles fine , yet when I engage the pto the engine shakes aggresively, blows black smoke and then dies.
I have changed both fuel filters and the air filter. I am at a loss as to what to do next.
Can a low hydrolic fluid level cause this or maybe a dirty filter?
Thanks
Any and all help will be appreciated.

TCOOPER,

You don't say at what RPM you are trying to engage the PTO, or what implement you are using. It should be off idle, probably about 1,700 to 2,000 RPM. DO NOT engage at full throttle of 3,000 RPM. After engage PTO, then throttle up to proper RPM for the implement and job.

FWIW, I usually engage at or just under 2,000 RPM then throttle up to 2,400 RPM for tilling or 3,100 RPM for mowing.

High or low rpm , doesn't have any bearing on the activation of the pto being engaged and stalling the engine.
Can a dirty hydrolic oil filter cause this or low oil?

Curious you didn't say which PTO mid or rear or both causes the stall. Mid PTO with mower attached could be mower jammed. Is anything attached to PTO when this happens?

To answer your question that you asked twice:
No.
Without knowing what you are engaging, I can't tell if it the implement or pto that has a problem. Does it do it when nothing is attached to either mid or rear pto shafts?

It dies when I engage the mower dek and the hydrostatic drive. As soon as the levers are moved to engage it dies.
It matters not what pto I try to activate , the only thing I have attached is the deck , but I have moved the selector lever to other positions and it does the same.
Thanks

If you disconnect the mower drive shaft & now you have two PTO's with nothing connected. When you engage either one of the PTO's & the engine dies the only conclusion I can come to is a seized bearing or gear damage in the PTO gear case. Not what you want to hear, but it is the only place left. I am assuming the engine is fine until a PTO is engaged.

D2Cat nice call on safety switch, I had one on BX2200 long ago. The original issue of engine shaking & black smoke led me to another way of thinking. When my switch went out the engine just quit, no shakes, no smoke. Hope he gets it fixed, no fun having equipment that will not work.
