Why is there a clutch lock on the L 3800?

My L 3800 gives me the ability to lock the clutch down. Under what circumstances would I want to do something like that? I have been using this tractor for 3 years and can not think of any. I was just wondering why the manufacturer put a clutch lock there.

I have the same tractor and don't think I have a clutch lock. Where is it located? Pics would be great.

Some tractors have a dual clutch. On those there is often a lever that can be dropped down to prevent the clutch going down further. The only time you'd need to push the clutch further down, is when engaging the PTO.

That is for locking the clutch if it's stored for a long period of time. If the clutch is left engaged for and extended period, the clutch plate can rust and stick making it impossible to disengage.

I knew I'd seen that before so I looked it up. Info was taken out of my L3600 owner's manual.

I just traded in a Ford 1215 I bought new in 1996 and when I cleaned it up found the original plastic "peg on a string loop" in the tool box that came with the tractor. The peg wedged between the foot rest and clutch pedal shaft when the unit was stored to keep the clutch plates apart. When the tractor was new I did have one occasion where the plates stuck together. I had to start the tractor in gear, drive forward at about 1 mph, then jam on the brakes with the clutch lever depressed to free the clutch plates. Not a smart idea but it was what the dealership told me to do! :)

Very interesting about locking the clutch open if storing the tractor for a long period of time. Thanks for the feedback.

If you use it in the rain, wash it extensively or left it out in the rain...engauge the clutch...slide the lock pin in...and you won't have to worry about the clutch rusting stuck against the flywheel...

It should have a spring on it to auto disingauge the pin when you depress the clutch...so you don't have to mess with it...

Major repair if it sticks...

I love how I'm always learning something new on this site. My B2910, which I got second hand, came with a block of wood in the tool box. The block has a groove on one side and some illegible writing on another side. I've always wondered what it is for. Now I know it's for the clutch. I figured out it's goes on the underside of the frame, between the frame and the rod connected to the clutch pedal. Very cool.

On the good side, if I forget it's there it will fall off when I press the pedal. On the bad side, it will fall to the ground and I'll run it over. Maybe I'll drill a hole through it to run a string or chain through so I can hang it.

Seen dozens of different tractors come into the shop with stuck clutches. When asked if they ever used the clutch lock, or block in some cases, the answer was always "no".

When the clutch gets stuck, it's nearly impossible to free it. Thus, on some Kubota's with dual clutches, it's close to a $3000 job to replace all the parts. Maybe more on bigger stuff.

Does this apply to the HST transmissions?
