L175 hard to start

Hi everyone,
I have an l175 that is hard to start, even when it's hot outside. I have to use the glow plugs on every start, even after it sits for a few minutes after running for a long time. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

I have to tell you, on my 2 B7100's , they both laugh at me UNLESS I glow them for 3 clicks or more on the hours meter..... about 10 seconds. I dont care if it is cold warm or hot...... - I dont have to do it right after I cut off if real hot!

But if I glow too short of a time, I get a lot of smoke and belching tis it gets going! :D:)

I think your model has its glow plugs wired in series which is not the norm on later models.

Plse post a picture of the glow plug area of the engine as something may be wired incorrectly.

My L1500 always needs a little glow plug to start without protest even when it's hot out.

you might need to test those glow plugs - and/or the voltage/current coming to them! It is not hard, you simply need a good ol volt/ohm meter.

report back if you need help testing them

My l1501 needs a little glow even in warm days. It energizes glow plugs while cranking, but it cranks too long for my liking. I give 20-30 seconds of glow so it doesent crank so long. I will add, it fired up way faster when i put a new battery in.

Neither the L175 or the L1500 have that resistor. I know my L1500 does not and it is not show on the wiring diagrams.
The circuits are similar excepting the ballast resistor.
The wiring diagram posted by ServiceDeptVic shows the series glowplugs, plus the glowplug controller (aka resistor/indicator) in the circuit diagram. That resistor is probably the glow plug indicator on the dash, not the additional ballast resistor. So when selecting GLOW, power flows through the dash indicator and heats up to give you an indication, then when START is selected it bypasses the dash indicator and power goes directly to the plugs. So the circuit is basically the same as the one mentioned in the thread that Dave_eng has noted except that it doesn't have the ballast resistor. The rest of the series connections should be the same, unless the glowplugs have been changed from original.

The big difference in the series wired glow plugs is that they do not ground via the engine block. Further, there are two different electrical terminals on the top of each glow plug and two distinct wires going to each glow plug.

The posted photo by the owner only shows one wire per glow plug.

If they are not heating properly, something must be wrong.

This photo shows what one owner had that did not work. Although there were two wires on each glow plug and a ground wire going to the engine block from the left hand GP, the wires on each glow plug were not isolated from each other. Current flowed through the dash indicator, the ballast resistor heated up and the glow plugs remained cold.

Ignore the red box on the upper left of the photo.

Removing one GP and seeing if it is heating would answer a lot of questions.


This is a series GP with two electrical terminals.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I'm going to start by testing the glow plugs with an volt meter first and let you know what I find.
