B2650 smoke and PTO noise

Hello everyone,

I'm the proud new owner of a B2650 HST and as such am also a new member of this forum! Spent a lot of time reading articles here before deciding to purchase my Kubota.

Though it seems like the ideal piece of equipment for maintenance work around my property, there are two distinct issues that I'm concerned about:

1) Every time the tractor is started, it gives off a puff/cloud of blue/black smoke. It does this each time, regardless of whether the engine is cold or hot. And it only does it for the first second it starts up - no smoking at all while running. Is that normal?

2) The PTO makes a rattling sound when it is engaged at low rpm (1100-1400) and not under load. Once the rpm is increased or an implement is attached, the rattling disappears. Is that normal?

I'm concerned that my new tractor might already have mechanical problems. I've considered taking it back to the dealer to have them linspect it, but I'd have to hire a truck with trailer to get it there. So though that Is first see if anyone here might have some insight before spending the money to ship the tractor. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A puff aint a real bad thing, anything with hours on it will do it over time, HOW many on your machine???

The pto may or may not have a zerk - check it out and grease it IF it does.

How long are you heating the glow plugs for before turning the key to "start"? (hot or cold) Fuel source? Additives? I'll look and see if I see a puff the next time I start mine, but I don't think there is much of one.

My guess is your tractor is fine, but you could make a list of little things to be seen to when you need to take it over for something else.

Its a diesel! It will make a puff of smoke on startup.
There will be a small amount of gear clatter on your pto. That is normal too. Enjoy your machine, everything is fine.

The smoke is normal every time I start mine. If I run it hot for a while and shut it down and restart it, the black puff is much less and it starts much faster. Get some fresh diesel and add some DIESEL KLEEN +CETANE BOOST. Also, hold down the glow plugs for 4 seconds before you turn the engine over. Diesel is sensitive to temperature.

I've had an issue with my mid pto doing almost the same thing. At first it would make a clicking sound and at faster speeds it would go away. (not under load) I had one shop look at it and they said it wasn't a big deal. Another shop I spoke with said it wasn't normal and I should bring it in. No other 2650's on the lots I went to (3 of them) would make that sound. I havent had an opportunity to take it in yet for a second opinion.

A puff of smoke on start up is normal. I always preheat mine, that sits in a garage, and still get a puff of smoke being a diesel engine.

My sincere thanks to all the replies.

The tractor has smoked upon startup since it arrived new in my driveway. The Dealer said it was normal for new diesels to do that until broken in. It now has just over 50 hours with all maintenance completed and fresh Kubota 10W-30 engine oil, and still smokes just as much. Letting it pre-heat for 10-15 seconds makes absolutely no difference. And I use fresh Esso ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.

I'm assuming that a larger tractor with a DPF wouldn't smoke upon startup. And this is the first small diesel tractor I've owned that has smoked upon startup. My diesel zero-turn doesn't puff any smoke at all. In fact, I've seen some older diesels with 1000's off hours smoke less. It's very disappointing for a first-time Kubota product owner.

And the PTO rattle is something I've not heard in any other tractor I've owned, though this is the first one with an HST transmission.

I have a B7510. It has smoked at start up since new and it's now 12 yrs old, approaching 1,000 hrs. Smoke at start up doesn't seem to have hurt anything. After all, it's a diesel. As to the rattle, lots of stuff is packed into a pretty small area and harmonics can cause close things to rattle. Track it down and insulate or isolate the offending piece. FWIW.

I'm a tractor newbie here, my B2650 is the first one I've ever owned. I'm only on my second tank of fuel, but I don't have any black puff of smoke on start up.

I don't preheat as it's fairly warm here right now, I don't use any additives in my fuel just straight out of the gas station pump.

Never used my mid PTO so I can't help you there.....

My B2650 does both of the things yours does. I wouldn't worry about it.
