There's no internal over running clutch on the L1500 PTO is there? I'm thinking about getting a brush mower, but having second thoughts. I can get an external over running clutch, but it makes the PTO stick out further.

No over running clutch inside. Have to add one. I just stuck one on my l1500 two days ago. Waiting for pto shaft before I go run the brush hog with it.
It doesn't stick out much further. Maybe 6 inches or so. You'll definitely need to check your pto shaft length after though.
The clutch I got came with a roll pin. You take off the grease zerks on it and the line the holes up with the clutch on the tractor pto. Bang the roll pin in. Re add zerks. In hindsight I'd grease the dang thing before putting it on. Putting that pin in was a pain. I did not have a bolt or socket the same size as roll pin. Tried silly stuff like using nail head etc. ended up damaging threads where grease zerks goes. The pin that holds the implement on the 3pt hitch with the flip down ring worked perfect to bang it in.
Thats the only way. My L1500 runs a 5 foot finish mower, just need to plan ahead. The overrunning clutch would make stopping easy. Can run it as is, but should use a low gear in tight quarters.it has been done this way for years.
