I just had 4 24" red oak stumps removed. Having dug one out two years ago by hand (no backhoe on my BX) I decided to hire a contractor with an excavator this time. Two of the trees were within three feet of each other and the stumps had merged underground. The excavator was just barely able to lift the double stump and could not lift it into the truck for removal. The excavator picked up and dropped the double stump a half dozen time to remove rocks and dirt and finally dropped it one more time trying to place it in the truck. One of the trunks hit the truck bed and the double stump finally broke in two. I don't think there are any many local backhoes that could have handled that double stump.
