I am new to this forum and tractors in general. I have been watching a lot of YouTube and internet research but was hoping someone could give me some advice. I recently bought a house with a hayfield. I do not plan on working the field but I want to make some trails through the fields for walking and observing nature. The home came with a tractor with several attachments including The FEL, a box blade, disk harrows, two bottom plow, flail mower and a subsoiler. What is the best method to make the trails with the equipment I have?

The flail mower is what you would use to keep grass cut to walk through. What kind of tractor was left behind inthe deal?

I would mow the trails then use the box blade.

Mow the trails and let the grass continue to grow in them. Keep them initially mowed at least twice as wide as you want them to be to make room for the limbs that will grow from the trees that will take over the unmowed areas.

If it's been a hay field I can not imagine why you'd need to use a box blade after mowing, for a walking trail!

As Skeets said, use your flail mower to mow it...and go for a walk.:D

That's all I do with the riding mower is cut double wide to make a path!

If you don't cut those fields with the flail mower eventually you won't have fields anymore. The flail will not cut down the tougher stuff, like small trees and bushes.

I would cut the entire hay field first then maybe keep your trails cut weekly even if you only mow the entire field monthly. It will reduce the amount of bugs, ticks, snakes, ect if the grass is kept low. Besides: it will have to be cut at some point unless you plan on leaving it untouched forever. Which will likely lead to weeds, brush, other things you don't want. Nature has a way of taking things over.

If the field is mainly hay/grass now then the flail mower should work great. If there is larger brush you might need to look into a brush hog (rotary mower). Before I had a mower I called the farmers around me and told them they could have the hay if the wanted to cut my field. One of them took me up on it and it worked out great!

you have a nice easy to make trail set up on what you describe!

im cutting trails all over the property we got.. but its just woods..

so i use my FEL to shove briars over/down.... move old logs & whatever else is there..

then my bush hog to wack it all down.

on the trails that are completed? i mow them every week or 10 days depending on weather..

now get ready because there are lots of romantic walks with your wife on those trails after that.

& then plan for more trails. we put a 1/2 mile of trails around the place this year.. & she has already requested another 1/2 mile for this fall/winter work..

so those walks will be at least a mile by next spring. :D

If memory serves, the cutters on flail mowers can be changed out depending on whether you're cutting brush or finish mowing.

I would find a farmer in the area that cuts hay. Have him cut it, he'll cut two to 3 times a year. I would then keep your trails mowed when I seen they need mowed.
