any dirt workers out there?
I am bringing in 2 inch crushed for my approach and then 3/4 minus. renting a jumping jack to compact it. It is virgin soil. I plan on laying road fabric also.
So does the road fabric go on top of the soil or between the 2 in and 3/4-.
My gut tells me to put it down before the 2 inch.

I'm not a dirt worker, but when I hired out an excavator and crew to build my road and circle driveway in Alaska, they came in with huge rolls of Typar (sp?) matting and after the culverts were placed and set, put the Typar on the ground, over tundra and all then started dumping large gravel/rock and compacting.

Geotextile or filter cloth are common names. Lay it on the dirt. A few stakes to hold it down. Buddy uses extra long roofing nails. Then wind wont pick it up and it stays in place when driving on it. Water will pass through it, but dirt will not come up through it. And gravel wont squish into the mud. Used it for my parking pad near my house, barely been a year but its great. Firm like the day we drove excavator back and forth to pack it. All we used was traffic gravel. 3/4" down screened gravel. The part we missed where it joined driveway is not very nice. Should have dug out some of the driveway for the fabric as well.

bearskinner,
i think we need a new thread. Maybe a commitment thread!
I will be there! Pig and jig or orange crush or what?
Floor in picture looks nice and a very reasonable finish.
Thanks again for the info.

The two times that someone has had occasion to put down the road fabric on my place he has taken out a layer of topsoil first, put the cloth down and then trucked in a lot of gravel, sand etc to make the grade so it would drain right. But Michigan was built on a swamp so maybe it depends on your locale.
