Hello,

Attempting to diagnose my steering sloppiness and popping. I've got the steering wheel off (never underestimate a block of wood and a hammer!) but now I've come to trying to get the dash and fuel tank off.

Is the easiest way to just remove the whole thing? A couple of things:

1. I presume I'll have to bleed to fuel system after this? Unless perhaps this thing here is a fuel shutoff? The screw above all the japanese writing (the picture is rotated on its left side for some reason, left is up!) Also what's the little gold valve below it? If i can shut off the fuel, i can go ahead and change the fuel filter and replace steering without bleeding?

2. Is the best way to remove the 2 bolts that attach at the back middle of the tank, and then two bolts on the each side of the middle of the tank? They look like a real pain to get to!

3. It looks like i'll need to remove the throttle control. Looks like one rusty cotter pin, remove bolt and I'll be good.

4. Last looks like I'll have to disconnect the hour meter, and what I presume is a choke (although I can't actually move the choke control) - not even sure it's a choke, looks like maybe some kind of idle control or something. Also there is a fuel line that runs into the top of the engine block from the fuel tank, what is this? just some pressure relief so some air gets in the tank to allow it to flow? Seems safe to remove for now

Thanks for any pointers!

- Mike

That petcock is for draining the coolant from the engine block, my fuel tank had a shut off coming out of the left side of the tank, yes you will probably need to bleed the fuel system once disconnected.

2. Is the best way to remove the 2 bolts that attach at the back middle of the tank, and then two bolts on the each side of the middle of the tank? They look like a real pain to get to!

Yes there should be 4 bolts holding the fuel tank on

Yes

4. That is your decompression knob not a choke, yes that the hour meter cable, and some wires will have to be rempoohoved to get the dash off, obviously the steering wheel will need to come off also, mine does not have a fuel line going to the top of the engine block, however there is a line coming out of the front of the tank back to the injectors, that is a return fuel line.

Thanks for any pointers!

That is a fuel bleed valve

Attached is a link to a L175 Shop Manual, that may help.....

Awesome thanks Bill for all the help trying to get this 1500 back in working order. I think I just need to read the manual straight through one time to get the lay of the land.

Sounds like I'm on the right path and will proceed. I'll post a picture of that fuel line on top when I get back. Once I get that dash and fuel tank off the steering box breakdown by service Vic looks pretty thorough!

Thanks again.

Also my tank also has that fuel petcock shutoff on the left side of the tank just under the gauge.

Started removing the tank and dash. Got throttle, tach, wheel and bracket bolts that hold the tank to the frame off. Now I have this electrical wire bunch into the dash still tethering me. Wasn't sure if I should disconnect everything at the end points or at the dash. I decided to do the dash. Unsure if that was wise.

Disconnected anything with a connector and now looks like only thing left is some wires to lugs on the blinkers and the start switch. Why could they just not use connectors!

So far a much more involved process than I had hoped! I spend my lunch break working on it. 1 hr at a time. Hopefully slow and steady wins the race.
