I recently purchased a 2007 M9540 and have noticed that the gear shifting 1-6 (range H - L works well) seems to be rather loose and sloppy. Sometimes I have released the clutch and only heard gears spinning - no movement. Is the shifting on this tractor normally rather loose and if not is there a way to make the shifting a little more 'crisp'?

There are all sorts of linkages and actuators for shifting these tractors. That's all I know about it.

I have read posts that discuss how to adjust them but do a search of this site and others to see if you can come up with something more specific.

A Kubota dealer may know more since there are TSBs about the issue if my memory is correct.

If it does it in all gears, check the shift lever where it bolts to the linkage in the cab.

It does it in all six gears. Any tips on what I need to disassemble to get to the linkage in the cab?

I had the same problem with my 4 speed, very sloppy in one direction and didn't want to go into 3 or 4 & my father had that problem with his 6 speed.

If You take the whole console apart to get to the primary linkage in the cab, you will find a small 8mm nut that is very loose in a universal type joint. tighten that back up and should be good to go, I'm not sure if the cabbed models are exactly like ours, but we just had to remove all the rubber boots, unbolt the loader controls, then take the plastic cowling off and keep searching and removing and it'll appear.

good luck. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the information. I do not have much time to work on the tractor and I live about 240 miles from my farm. I do not have any heated facility to work in so I will be waiting until warmer weather arrives to look at this when time permits - I also have to look into why the intake manifold air pre-heater is not functioning. I have the electrical diagrams - just need the time to disassemble the dash and get to the ignition and relays that control the power to the heater coil.
I will post back when I have looked into this and discovered the cause - I hope that it is a simple fix!:)

pmhowe: ..and he didn't even tell us! Nonetheless, Headhunter, you provided some useful information. Thankyou.
I guess that I should have been a little more clear about whether I had found any resolution - I have not. Since the tractor is operating satisfactorily and I have not had any spare time that I have spent trying to resolve the shifting 'annoyance' - I have just been waiting/searching for information to help make the 'fix' as easy as possible. Thanks again and please add any more info/hints that might make the resolution as simple as possible - I like 'quick and easy'.:)

Hi TThorkill,

You and I posted at the same time. I didn't mean to imply you were not clear in your response. I was responding to GWD's post and commenting on the fact that the original poster never got back with his solution. Anyway, good luck solving your problem.
